About The Position

The Volunteer Manager is responsible for developing, coordinating, and overseeing MHASF’s volunteer and practicum programs. This position supervises and supports a combination of remote and in-person volunteers, including practicum students, Warm Line volunteers, and volunteers supporting in-person peer services.

Requirements

  • 3+ years of experience managing or coordinating volunteers, interns, programs, or teams, including recruitment, onboarding, scheduling, training, and ongoing support
  • 2+ years of supervisory or management experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in social work, psychology, public health, human services, nonprofit management, or a related field, or equivalent combination of education and relevant experience
  • Experience developing or managing volunteer programs, preferably in a nonprofit, community-based, or human services setting
  • Deep familiarity with mental health peer support, peer recovery, and peer-led approaches, including self-determination, lived experience, and person-centered support
  • Experience working in mental health, behavioral health, peer support, social services, or a related field
  • Strong organizational, communication, and relationship-building skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and support a diverse group of volunteers and practicum students
  • Experience providing coaching, feedback, and support to volunteers, interns, or staff
  • Ability to work Saturday through Wednesday, 9:00 am to 5:00 pm and work on site at 870 Market Street, Suite 658, San Francisco
  • Commitment to MHASF’s peer-led, voluntary, self-directed, and non-clinical approach to mental health support

Responsibilities

  • Recruit, onboard, train, schedule, and support volunteers and practicum students.
  • Provide ongoing supervision, coaching, and performance support to approximately five practicum students and five general volunteers, with the program expected to grow over time.
  • Coordinate remote practicum placements and ensure students meet program and university requirements.
  • Develop and maintain meaningful volunteer opportunities across Warm Line, peer services, and administrative functions.
  • Coordinate in-person volunteer shifts at the MHASF office, including use of designated volunteer workstations and Warm Line equipment.
  • Manage the MHASF front desk during designated shifts, providing administrative support, and serving as a point of contact for visitors, staff, and volunteers.
  • Provide weekend operational coordination and support for volunteer-supported Warm Line activities.
  • Serve as an on-site point of contact for weekend Warm Line operations and escalate staff, safety, technology, or service issues to the appropriate supervisor.
  • Maintain volunteer records, schedules, hours, training requirements, and other program documentation.
  • Build an engaging, sustainable volunteer program that expands MHASF’s capacity to provide peer support and related services.
