About The Position

The UC Irvine Student Health Center is a comprehensive outpatient clinic staffed with licensed primary care physicians, psychiatrists, licensed clinical social workers, dentists, physician assistants, registered nurse practitioners, and registered nurses. Medical specialists from various disciplines including dermatology, orthopedics/sports medicine, gynecology, internal medicine, and ENT provide on-site consultation on a regular basis. Student Health also offers basic radiology and clinical laboratory services, insurance consultation, and an on-site pharmacy, making SHC a comprehensive and convenient clinic dedicated to serving students. Under the supervision of the Clinical Nurse Supervisor and Manager, Clinical Nurses, Medical Director, or licensed medical care provider (physician, physician assistant, or nurse practitioner), the Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) provides quality nursing care for all patients presenting at the Student Health Center. The LVN is responsible for essential functions: patient centered duties, managing supplies and equipment, completing nursing department duties and other tasks delegated by the Clinical Nurse Manager or Medical Director. The LVN is responsible for maintaining harmonious relationships and favorable attitudes among the health care team; practices the standards of quality nursing care; practices the principles of infection control; responds appropriately when an emergency situation occurs and performs the duties and responsibilities outlined.

Requirements

  • General knowledge of Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA)
  • Basic knowledge and understanding of anatomy and physiology, including medical terminology
  • Basic skill, knowledge and ability to assist with Women’s Health Clinic, General clinic and minor surgical procedures
  • Critical understanding of Universal Precautions, sterile techniques and principles of infection control
  • Effective communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Skill, knowledge and ability to accurately perform vital signs (BP, TPR), height(Ht) and weight (Wt) and calculate Body Mass Index (BMI)
  • Ability to perform visual acuity tests, color vision test, audiometry and pulmonary function tests
  • Basic knowledge of common radiology diagnostic tests, i.e., UGI, BE, IVP, ultrasound, CT scan, MRI, etc.
  • Basic knowledge of common laboratory tests and ability to collect or assist with the collection of urine clean catch/midstream specimen, stool for occult blood and stool for ova and parasites, wet mount, GC, Chlamydia, PAP smear and sputum specimen
  • Basic knowledge and ability to use medical supplies
  • Basic knowledge regarding identification, operation and maintenance of the following equipment: oxygen administration unit (O2 tank, mask, and cannula), autoclave unit, surgical instruments, suction machine and tubing, hyfercator, EKG unit and liquid nitrogen
  • Knowledge and experience in maintaining medical records, understand patient confidentiality and standard of patient care
  • Basic computer skills including electronic medical records
  • Valid and current LVN license in State of California
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS)/Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) card and must maintained in accordance with the American Heart Association standards
  • Certification in IV Therapy
  • Certificate of completion for Immunization administration and PPD skin test administration
  • 1-3 years working in acute, ambulatory, or urgent care
  • Must be able to provide proof of work authorization
