About The Position

The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) is one of the largest, most complex agencies in the state, and has approximately 17,000 employees. It is responsible for ensuring the health, safety, and well-being of all North Carolinians, providing human service needs for special populations including individuals who are deaf, blind, developmentally disabled, and mentally ill, and helping poor North Carolinians achieve economic independence. This Vocational Evaluator position is located in the Sylva VR/IL Unit Office in Jackson County and serves consumers referred by counselors in the unit and the Waynesville and Murphy satellite offices. The primary purpose of the Vocational Evaluator is to provide vocational evaluation services to individuals with disabilities. The selected candidate provides comprehensive vocational evaluation assessments for persons with a range of disabilities, education levels, and work experience in order to assist with job planning and placement. The DHHS Division of Employment and Independence for People with Disabilities (EIPD) promotes employment and independence for people with disabilities through customer partnership and community leadership. EIPD helps people with disabilities achieve their goals for competitive employment and more independent living in communities statewide.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in vocational evaluation, rehabilitation counseling, or closely related human services field from an appropriately accredited institution; or Bachelor’s degree in vocational evaluation, rehabilitation counseling, or a closely related human services field from an appropriately accredited institution and two years of experience that provides the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Responsibilities

  • Administering/scoring/interpreting an extensive variety of vocational interest, achievement, and aptitude tests
  • Analyzing consumers' medical, psychological, socio-economic, vocational and educational information in the context of vocational planning
  • Developing a formal evaluation plan for each consumer
  • Creating written reports outlining vocational aptitudes, interests, and abilities which are foundational to the vocational planning process
  • Conducting community-based assessments and making referrals for evaluation services to the consumer and the rehabilitation counselor(s)
  • Participating in multi-disciplinary teams and committees for exchange of information and planning
  • Partnering with consumers and their family members, employers, school personnel, and other community agencies/contacts
