About The Position

Founded in 1647, Boston Public Schools (BPS) is the oldest public school district in the country. With approximately 56,000 students from over 114 different countries, nearly 9,000 employees (including 5,000 teachers) and an annual budget of $829 million, the BPS is the largest school district in Massachusetts and is one of the most diverse as well. BPS has been recognized as one of the top urban school districts in the United States and was recently awarded the Broad Prize for Urban Education as the most improved urban school district in the nation. Madison Park Technical Vocational High School is the only technical vocational high school in the City of Boston. We have 27 programs of study. All technical-vocational students focus on a career major with the intention of entering a career and post-secondary program of study. The Career Technical Vocational Program Director will assist with the implementation of the integration of academic and vocational programs.

Requirements

  • Director of Vocational Education Certification
  • Three (3) years urban teaching/administrative experience in a vocational setting
  • Master’s degree plus thirty (30) graduate semester hours
  • Within the Master’s or supplementary to it, nine (9) hours in educational administration/supervision courses
  • Experience in establishing and maintaining a multicultural community of learning
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the Chapter 74 regulations and federal, state and/or local grant-funding process requirements
  • Demonstrated knowledge of creating and facilitating business, college, and community partnerships

Responsibilities

  • Ensures curriculum, schedules, and program operations follow Chapter 74 regulations and CTE Standards
  • Makes recommendations that ensure ongoing integration between CTE and academic departments
  • Plans and implements professional development activities for CTE staff members
  • Participates in developing Madison Park’s Educational Plan required for the new school’s design and construction
  • Collaborates with the Cooperative Education Coordinator, counselors, and academic and vocational teachers to provide students with the preparation and support required to enter and complete the Cooperative Education program
  • Creates and sustains a climate that motivates students and staff members to excel in their selected technical vocational programs
  • Recommends candidates to the Head of School
  • Meets with CTE teachers during Common Planning Time (CPT) to review, discuss, and implement effective instructional strategies
  • Frequently observes and evaluates the effectiveness of instruction in CTE shops, labs, and classrooms and takes necessary steps to ensure that the quality of instruction is maintained
  • Participates in the assessment and placement of students in vocational programs
  • Works with teachers to monitor and analyze student performance and progress
  • Ensures students’ vocational competency attainment reports are available to all parents and guardians at the end of each marking period
  • Meets regularly with staff in the BPS Office of Career Technical Vocational Education
  • Provides leadership on developing and implementing Federal and State grants related to career and technical education
  • Develops and maintains effective partnerships with private-sector, non-profit, and post-secondary organizations and agencies
  • Organizes and supports Program Advisory Boards (PAB) and ensures PAB meetings are held at least twice per year
  • Encourages active participation by CTE teachers in PAB activities
  • Collaborates with the Madison Park Family Liaison and Recruitment Manager to inform parents about CTE programs and services
  • Advises the administration on funding allocations for facility maintenance, instructional materials, equipment, technology, supplies, and other programming costs
  • Ensures compliance with all prevailing State (Chapter 74 603 CMR 4.00) and Federal safety regulations (including OSHA)
  • Performs other related duties as assigned
