About The Position

Mercer University School of Medicine is seeking a highly qualified Vivarium and Research Lab Manager on the Columbus, GA campus. This role involves managing and performing all activities within the animal vivarium, including animal husbandry and care, and ensuring compliance with reporting requirements for IACUC, OLAW, and USDA oversight. The position also entails creating, maintaining, and adhering to standard operating procedures and protocols. Additionally, as Research Lab Manager, the incumbent will assist in managing and maintaining research laboratory facilities, ensuring proper and safe use of equipment, monitoring adherence to departmental policies, managing supply usage, and advising on equipment needs.

Requirements

  • A bachelor's degree in biomedical sciences or a related field from an accredited institution and five years of prior laboratory experience which must include work with animals.
  • Must know how to use Microsoft Word and Excel to prepare various reports.
  • Must be able to learn and apply basic principles and practices of laboratory animal care and facility maintenance.
  • Must be able to keep written records of animal health, daily tasks, and facility conditions.
  • Must be able to learn and abide by the IACUC, OLAW, and USDA regulations as they apply to a laboratory animal vivarium.
  • Must be able to write and follow standard operating procedures and protocols for the vivarium and research laboratory.
  • Must be able to work with disinfectants, germicides, and cleaning agents commonly used in the animal vivarium.
  • Must be able to work on rotating weekends and holidays in the animal vivarium.

  • Candidates with a master's degree and two years of the same experience will also be considered.

Responsibilities

  • Managing and performing all activities within the animal vivarium on the Columbus campus to include all aspects of animal husbandry and care.
  • Responsible for all reporting requirements associated with IACUC, OLAW, and USDA oversight.
  • Ensuring creation, maintenance of, and adherence to standard operating procedures and protocols.
  • Managing and maintaining the research laboratory facilities on the Columbus campus of MUSM.
  • Maintaining as well as ensuring proper and safe use of departmental equipment.
  • Monitoring proper adherence to departmental policies regarding conducting research, use of resources, handling and disposal of research materials.
  • Monitoring departmental usage of laboratory supplies, assisting in ordering supplies and advising on current and future equipment needs.
  • Troubleshooting and maintaining vivarium and research laboratory equipment.
