About The Position

Your Work Shapes the World at Caterpillar Inc. When you join Caterpillar, you're joining a global team who cares not just about the work we do – but also about each other. We are the makers, problem solvers, and future world builders who are creating stronger, more sustainable communities. We don't just talk about progress and innovation here – we make it happen, with our customers, where we work and live. Together, we are building a better world, so we can all enjoy living in it. The Lead Visualization Engineer develops real-time 3D visualization for digital twins for Caterpillar’s robotics and autonomous systems. This role combines visualization, simulation, robotics, and game development expertise to create high-fidelity, interactive environments representing machines, job sites, and workflows. The engineer will leverage NVIDIA Omniverse, modern C++/Python, and game engine principles to integrate robotic behaviors, autonomy systems, and sensor data into immersive visualization platforms. This is a hands-on leadership role driving architecture, execution, and mentoring.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s in Computer Science, Robotics, Engineering, or related field.
  • 5+ Years experience in 3D rendering, scene building, and performance optimization.
  • Experience in simulation, robotics, visualization, or game development.
  • Strong experience with game engines (Unity/Unreal) and/or real-time rendering.
  • Expertise in NVIDIA Omniverse (USD, Kit, PhysX) or similar platforms.
  • Proficiency in C++ and Python.
  • Knowledge of robotics systems, sensor visualization, or autonomy workflows.
  • Strong cross-functional collaboration skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with robotics (ROS/ROS2), autonomy, or heavy equipment systems.
  • Familiarity with digital twin platforms and cloud-based simulation workflows.
  • Background in large-scale or distributed simulation system.

Responsibilities

  • Build high-performance real-time rendering systems for digital twins using Omniverse.
  • Create visually accurate representations of machines, robotics systems, and job site environments.
  • Develop interactive 3D environments using game engine systems (physics, animation, scene management).
  • Integrate robotics simulation outputs (motion, autonomy, sensor data) into the rendering pipeline.
  • Visualize perception data (LiDAR, cameras, etc.) in sync with simulation state.
  • Optimize rendering for large-scale environments, multi-robot scenarios, and sensor-heavy scenes.
  • Implement LOD, streaming, and GPU optimization techniques for scalability.
  • Build tools and editor extensions for scene creation, debugging, and data visualization.
  • Partner with robotics, autonomy, and simulation teams to translate data into visual systems.
  • Apply game development best practices to robotics visualization architecture and systems.
  • Evaluate and adopt new rendering, simulation, and visualization technologies.
  • Develop visualization tools for simulation validation, replay, and scenario analysis.
  • Ensure rendered output accurately reflects underlying robotics and simulation behavior.
