About The Position

The Visual Merchandiser is responsible for designing, constructing, arranging, and maintaining effective and artistic visual merchandise presentations and displays within Navy Exchange facilities. This includes decorating various interior and exterior locations such as walls, showcases, windows, shelves, and countertops, and setting up focal displays to attract customer attention, often supporting seasonal themes or special merchandising events. The role also involves preparing signs, show cards, and other printed materials using computer software and desktop publishing programs, including determining layout, color, and type specifications. The Visual Merchandiser works with store management on display requirements, sets up mannequins and other fixtures, and may assist with the installation of signs. Additionally, the position requires maintaining storage areas for props, mannequins, tools, and fixtures, keeping records of services, procuring supplies, and potentially taking publicity photographs and writing articles for employee newsletters.

Requirements

  • Drivers license required for positions assigned driving responsibilities.
  • Ability to climb ladders.
  • Ability to perform moderate lifting of objects occasionally weighing up to 50 lbs.
  • 2 years experience which demonstrated possession of the necessary mechanical and artistic skills required in visual merchandising display and communication.
  • Experience may have been gained in operation of sign machines, graphics illustration, visual display, or interior decoration.
  • Education successfully completed in specialized schools of interior decoration, design, or art may be substituted for experience year for year (provided an average of 150 class hours a year is shown in interior decoration or design).
  • 1 year education successfully completed in an accredited college or university may be substituted for each year of experience (provided an average of six semester hours a year included courses in interior decoration or design, architecture, commercial art, or related fine arts courses).

Responsibilities

  • Constructs, arranges, and maintains effective and artistic visual merchandising presentations and displays in appropriate interior and exterior Exchange locations, including walls, showcases, windows, shelves, and countertops.
  • Decorates designated areas such as showcases, ledges, shelves, and fixtures.
  • Sets up focal displays near entrances of Exchange to attract customer's attention, designed to support seasonal moods and/or special merchandising events.
  • Prepares appropriate signs, show cards, etc., as required.
  • Works with store management personnel on decoration and display requirements, including designing and assembling key department displays to highlight principal merchandising efforts and/or assembly of fixtures.
  • Sets up mannequins, center counter, column, and shadow box displays as instructed.
  • Enters information into a computer for sign making, determining layout, color selection, color interpolation type, and reviewing/adjusting copy for compatibility with formats and specifications.
  • Utilizes a desktop publishing program.
  • Prepares specifications for a variety of printed material and signs by item number, description, quantity, unit, and estimated value, and reviews the final product for accuracy and completeness.
  • Assists in determining signing formats to meet particular needs.
  • May receive requisitions from Exchange departments for specific sign printing projects.
  • Uses a sign machine to print display signs, produce flyers for sales events, price cards, show cards, signs, and related work using various types and sizes of type, color, and poster boards.
  • Delivers completed signs to requesting departments and assists with their installation.
  • Is responsible for the safekeeping of props, mannequins, tools, and fixtures in storage areas, maintaining them in a clean and orderly manner.
  • Maintains records and logs on duplicating and sign making services provided.
  • Procures materials and supplies needed to fulfill sign making assignments.
  • As required, takes publicity photographs and writes articles for placement in employee newsletters on sales and events.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
