About The Position

The State of Connecticut, Department of Public Health (DPH), Marketing & Communications Office (MarComm) is seeking a creative, technically skilled Visual Media Designer 1 to join a dynamic and expanding team. This role involves turning public health information into compelling visual stories that reach diverse communities across Connecticut. MarComm is in an active growth period, expanding its multimedia capabilities, and building out a podcast studio, community engagement function, and digital content strategy. The mission of the Department of Public Health (DPH) is to protect and improve the health and safety of the people of Connecticut by assuring the conditions in which people can be healthy, preventing disease, injury, and disability, and promoting the equal enjoyment of the highest attainable standard of health.

Requirements

  • Four (4) years of experience in commercial or illustration art or engineering drafting.
  • Knowledge of graphic materials.
  • Ability to utilize computer software including publishing and graphic design software.
  • Knowledge of most effective methods of graphic demonstration of materials.
  • Interpersonal skills.
  • Oral and written communication skills.
  • Skills in free hand sketching, water color, oil, lettering and montage work.
  • Ability to utilize auxiliary equipment such as large scale printers.
  • Ability to prepare original art work.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience planning, filming, and editing video content using Adobe Premiere Pro, or other similar editing software.
  • Experience producing graphic design materials, including social media graphics, infographics, flyers, or print collateral, using Canva or Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop).
  • Experience producing or supporting a podcast or similar visual news/storytelling content, including audio editing, visual support content, and platform publishing (e.g., Spotify, YouTube, Vimeo).
  • Experience creating public health, government, or nonprofit communications content for diverse audiences, with attention to plain-language and accessibility standards.
  • Experience working in a collaborative creative team environment, managing multiple concurrent projects and deadlines.

Responsibilities

  • Work alongside an experienced Visual Media Designer and collaborate with communications specialists, web professionals, and community engagement staff to produce video, graphic design, and multimedia content that reaches diverse audiences across the state.
  • Discover the opportunity to make a measurable impact on how Connecticut residents receive and engage with public health information.
  • Using various media designs and prepares illustrations, typography, graphs, charts, maps, cartoons and layouts for websites, reports, publications and booklets.
  • Designs, lays out, letters and prepares art work on charts and diagrams for websites, publications and exhibitions.
  • Creates designs for covers.
  • Confers with supervisors as to media and method of design for various projects.
  • Designs, prepares and illustrates exhibit and display material for department usage and public display.
  • Edits digital video and images.
  • Creates online fillable forms and related ancillaries.
  • May make freehand sketches of designs and drawings.
  • May design and illustrate visual aids pertaining to training or other programs of the agency.
  • Performs related duties as required.
