The Visual Field Technician performs optical characteristic determinations of spectacle lenses using a lensometer or autolensometer. They conduct various visual field test procedures on patients of all ages, including confrontation fields, Humphrey visual fields, virtual reality visual fields (VRVF), tangent screen visual fields, and Amsler grid tests. The role also involves the insertion and removal of hard and soft contact lenses, administration of eye drops, and auto refraction. The technician educates patients on testing procedures, monitors patient progress during diagnostic testing and consultations in other departments, and serves as a liaison between physicians, patients, and other departments, ensuring patient-centric care. They adhere to University of Miami policies, standards, and values, complying with regulations and maintaining patient confidentiality. The position requires a professional appearance, adherence to best practices in patient safety, hand hygiene, and infection control, and completion of mandatory training. Educational courses for ophthalmic personnel are attended when assigned. The role emphasizes high-quality work through accuracy, timeliness, professionalism, and thoroughness, meeting daily productivity goals. Equipment calibration and ensuring instrumentation is in proper working order are key responsibilities. Participation in assigned clinical research and maintaining required certifications are also part of the role. The technician organizes and stocks rooms, travels to satellite eye centers when necessary, and works evenings and weekends as needed. They perform organizational duties, make suggestions for practice improvements to physicians and/or Practice Managers, and handle medical emergencies competently and in adherence to hospital policy, prioritizing patient safety and well-being.
