About The Position

The Visual Communications Designer helps patients and families engage in their healthcare by creating clear visual health communications with the Patient Education and Engagement Team. This role provides medical illustration, graphic design and visual communications support, and facilitates the development of visual health communications tools based on user design principles. This part-time role will support an upcoming project to co-design and publish resources for respiratory rehab. The Visual Communications Designer will work closely with Patient Education and the clinical rehab team, including healthcare professionals, Patient Partners, educators and others.

Requirements

  • Graduate of relevant health or biomedical communications, computer graphics or graphic arts program at a recognized college or university
  • A portfolio is required to demonstrate relevant design experience
  • Demonstrated practical knowledge of illustration and computer graphics methods
  • In depth knowledge of Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Acrobat, Canva, PowerPoint, or other currently used computer programs
  • Current knowledge of technical advances in accessibility, graphic techniques and software, etc., required
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Effective negotiation skills
  • Excellent written/verbal communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment and collaborate as an active participant with others in assisting with the delivery of service to clients

Nice To Haves

  • Three years of relevant experience as a health illustrator or graphic artist, an asset
  • Paper and digital formats design, and interactive design
  • Knowledge of plain language editing skills an asset
  • Knowledge of consumer health information, bias-free communications, user experience design and health promotion principles an asset

Responsibilities

  • Plan and manage health communication design projects and initiatives
  • Integrate principles of health literacy, user design principles and equity, diversity and inclusion into visual projects
  • Completes design and layout of resources including brochures and web resources, manuals and other tools as needed
  • Design and illustration of physiology, healthcare equipment, icons, other graphics
  • Source images and identifying suitable images within the collection to meet resource needs
  • Maintains UHN and Patient Engagement branding by ensuring that all designs and concepts comply with branding guidelines and provide consistency
  • Maintains quality and tracks time, staying within the project budget
  • Administers cost recovery processes, including quotes and invoicing for work completed
  • Uses required software for graphic design and formatting
  • Maintains archives and filing as per department standards, using electronic filing systems
