About The Position

This internship at Pomona Lake offers the opportunity to support the US Army Corps of Engineer's visitor assistance program. The participant will inform lake visitors about day-use and campground information, and also contribute to public safety and natural resource management programs. Key duties include interacting with visitors, providing interpretive talks, assisting with lake volunteer programs, accompanying rangers on patrols, updating information displays, and communicating lake and weather conditions. Marginal duties may involve light maintenance tasks, replacing signs, mowing, weed trimming, invasive species management, and assisting with prescribed fire management plans.

Requirements

  • Must be at least 18 years old on start date.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid state driver’s license.
  • Must complete defensive driving training provided by the government.
  • Must have the ability to effectively speak, read, and write in English.
  • Must have the ability to work outdoors and lift up to 40 pounds.
  • Must wear SCA-provided attire while on duty.

Responsibilities

  • Interacting with visitors and telling the Corps' story.
  • Performing environmental stewardship duties such as natural resource area inspections, boundary inspections, identifying desirable vegetation and noxious weeds, and using GIS applications with handheld devices.
  • Providing interpretive talks to the visiting public.
  • Assisting in the management of lake volunteer programs, including daily communication with volunteers, record-keeping of volunteer hours, assigning volunteer tasks, and recording completed volunteer tasks.
  • Accompanying rangers during vehicle and boat patrols.
  • Updating bulletin boards, stocking and distributing informative material at Public Service Areas (PSAs), and staffing information centers during periods of high visitation.
  • Updating the public on lake and weather conditions via recorded daily voice messages and answering phone calls.
  • Performing light maintenance tasks to make repairs in recreation and natural resource areas.
  • Replacing signs at PSAs.
  • Mowing/Weed Trimming.
  • Invasive species management.
  • Assisting rangers with prescribed fire management plans.
