About The Position

The Visiting Student Intern will receive mentored research training and support ongoing projects in the Asthana Lab in the UND Department of Chemistry. The position will contribute to computational and theoretical chemistry research, including heavy-element electronic structure, quantum chemistry method development, and quantum-algorithm-related research as assigned by the supervisor.

  • Completed a 3-year/4-year B.S./B.Sc. degree in Chemistry or a closely related field
  • Ability to work 40 hours/week beginning September 1, 2026, for a temporary appointment consistent with UND temporary-position limits.
  • Successful completion of a Criminal History Background Check
  • In compliance with federal law, all persons hired will be required to verify identity and eligibility to work in the US and to complete the required employment eligibility verification form upon hire.

Nice To Haves

  • Coursework or research experience in physical chemistry, quantum chemistry, computational chemistry, or chemical physics
  • Experience with Python, Linux/Unix, Git, spreadsheets, plotting, or scientific computing
  • Familiarity with molecular modeling, electronic-structure software, high-performance computing, or literature review in chemistry.

Responsibilities

  • Run and document computational chemistry or quantum chemistry calculations under supervisor guidance, including preparing inputs, checking outputs, and organizing result files.
  • Assist with testing, adapting, and documenting scripts, notebooks, or workflows used for electronic-structure, quantum-algorithm, or data-analysis projects.
  • Analyze research results, prepare figures/tables, and summarize findings for lab discussions, internal reports, presentations, or manuscripts.
  • Conduct literature review and maintain organized research notes, references, datasets, and reproducible records consistent with lab policy.
  • Participate in group meetings, training, compliance activities, and other related research-support tasks assigned by the supervisor.
