About The Position

The Virtual Safety Attendant (VSA) provides continuous observation of assigned patients via virtual 1:1 safety observation under the direction of the Registered Nurse (RN). This role includes direct visual observation, prompt verbal re-direction, ongoing safety checks, environmental and care checks for comfort, recording of observations, and safety care provided. The VSA acts as a liaison between the patient and the nurse, observing and escalating concerns to the nurse on duty. They summon floor staff when patients require immediate assistance or family requests it, or in the event of a critical incident. The VSA also delivers virtual customer service and support to patients, families, and visitors, and provides direction on hospital resources when applicable.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent GED.
  • Current AHA BLC HCP certification.
  • 6 months or more working within a health care or related field using medical terminology.
  • Typing, Multi-tasking, Basic Computer skills.
  • Able to function independently and manage own time and work tasks.

  • Experience using EMR, computer-based triage, virtual work experience.
  • Proficient knowledge of typing, familiarity with organizational technology, and operational systems such as but not limited to: use of computer, webcam, headset, telephone, teams, Microsoft Word, and Outlook.

Responsibilities

  • Utilizes virtual audio and visual observation equipment to observe assigned patient groups under the direction of a Registered Nurse (RN).
  • Uses 2-way audio and video equipment, software, and unit support resources to maintain constant visual contact and promptly re-direct patients for safety.
  • Monitors and prioritizes a group of patients simultaneously, remaining alert and focused.
  • Performs multiple tasks such as typing, using technical equipment, safety checks, and documentation simultaneously.
  • Ensures work tasks and behaviors comply with clinical and administrative directives, policies, procedures, and VSA scope of practice.
  • Identifies, reports, and escalates suspected patient safety concerns to nursing staff and collaborates to ensure a safe patient environment.
  • Immediately summons nursing staff if the patient requires assistance.
  • Provides basic technical support for the telemedicine system and triages more difficult problems to appropriate staff.
  • Supports the nursing plan of care within the scope of practice for VSA in the virtual monitoring environment.
  • Distributes, positions, troubleshoots, retrieves, and sanitizes the Virtual Safety Monitoring (VSM) Guardian® device and collateral equipment as needed on site.
  • Documents virtual support activities in accordance with hospital policies, procedures, and standards of care within specified time frames.
  • Documents incidents and reports when a patient appears to pose a threat to themselves or others.
  • Observes, reports, and documents patient behaviors and observations per procedure for assigned patient groups each shift.
  • Reports and escalates urgent needs to the supervising RN or management as needed.
  • Maintains compliance with all VCUHS Hospital policies and procedures regarding PHI, HIPAA, Security, Compliance, Email, Infection Control, and Reporting of Incidents.
  • Maintains confidentiality, exercises discretion, uses independent and mature judgment, and works independently.
  • Provides direction and/or customer service assistance to patients, families, or visitors with respect.
  • Represents VCUHS Star Service behaviors and positively represents the department.
  • Supports department patient satisfaction goals by providing prompt assistance.
  • Participates in mandatory organizational quality initiatives and unit-based QA/CQI activities.
  • Performs any other duties as assigned and participates in special projects.
  • Helps team members and accepts alternate assignments graciously.

Benefits

  • Compensation Range: $16.00 - $23.53
  • Actual salary offers will be based on several key factors to include relevant work experience, credentials, and qualifications.
