About The Position

Nebraska Methodist Health System is seeking a Virtual Registered Nurse to provide remote nursing care to patients and assist bedside Registered Nurses (RNs) through the use of technology. This role involves virtually administering patient care using the nursing process, collaborating with healthcare professionals, and utilizing virtual tools for effective patient communication. The position requires troubleshooting technical issues and providing age-specific care. The nurse will perform initial and ongoing evaluations, develop and revise care plans, provide patient teaching, and collaborate with providers and other clinical disciplines. Maintaining professional behavior, effective communication, and competence in nursing practice are essential. The role also includes fiscal accountability, responsible use of resources, and accurate charging for supplies and equipment. The schedule is 24 hours per week on a rotating schedule Monday through Friday between 8:00 am and 9:00 pm, with the potential for weekend and night shifts as the program expands to 24/7 coverage.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) or Master’s Degree in Nursing (MSN) from an accredited college of nursing required OR obtained within 5 years from date of hire for nurses with an Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN).
  • Five years previous inpatient nursing experience required.
  • Current valid Registered Nurse (RN) license, valid compact multistate license, or a temporary permit while awaiting licensure required.
  • Proficient in using electronic medical records (EMR), Microsoft Office products, and virtual communication tools.
  • Excellent internal and external customer service skills.
  • Ability to effectively communicate (both verbally and written) with wide variety of disciplines.
  • Ability to demonstrate independent clinical reasoning and decision-making skills.
  • Flexibility and ability to thrive in a multi-tasking environment.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in telehealth or virtual care preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for providing remote nursing care to the patient and assistance to the bedside Registered Nurse (RN) through use of technology.
  • Virtually administer patient care by utilizing the nursing process of assessing, planning, implementing, coordinating, monitoring, and evaluating the patient's care plan from admission to discharge.
  • Collaborate with other healthcare professionals to ensure effective and efficient patient care delivery and the achievement of desired patient outcomes.
  • Utilize virtual tools to communicate effectively with patients.
  • Troubleshoot technical issues.
  • Provide appropriate care specific to the age of the customer/patient to ensure understanding and comfort level of treatment as outlined in the Population Specific Criteria.
  • Demonstrate ability to identify opportunities for and give individualized customer/patient care according to customer/patient needs.
  • Perform initial and ongoing evaluation to determine the assigned patient’s ongoing nursing care needs.
  • Include data from the patient/significant other(s) in the evaluation, as appropriate.
  • Prioritize data collection according to the patient’s immediate needs.
  • Use evaluation findings in discharge planning.
  • Develop/review/revise and individualize the plan of care to address the patient’s nursing care needs for optimum patient care outcomes.
  • Provide teaching specific to the patient’s health care problem.
  • Evaluate care plan for continuing care needs and/or referrals for discharge/transfer.
  • Collaborate with providers and other clinical disciplines, as appropriate.
  • Perform tasks that are consistent with the established plan of care in a safe and appropriate manner.
  • Is familiar with, and follows, nursing protocols and standards of care for each nursing unit served.
  • Use current knowledge in nursing practice based on standards and research literature.
  • Evaluate patient care to determine response to care/interventions for optimal patient outcome.
  • Monitor and document patient response to appropriate interventions.
  • Evaluate the patient’s capabilities and/or limitations related to nursing and medical interventions.
  • Monitor the patient and/or significant other(s) ability to manage care needs after dismissal.
  • Recognize and address patient and family capabilities and limitations (physical and mental).

  • Complete appropriate report form for any risk (e.g. variance/incident report, patient concern report, maintenance request).
  • Communicate to appropriate personnel regarding unresolved issues.
  • Work within the scope of practice as defined by the State Nurse Practice Act.
  • Review, delegate, and evaluate plans for appropriate utilization of staff at all levels of practice in accordance with the provision of the state’s Nurse Practice Act and the Professional Standards of Practice.
