About The Position

Violence Interruption work requires familiarity with and experience in communities that have been impacted by violence. This role requires the ability to communicate and demonstrate care to survivors of violence and their families, as well as the ability to work independently and with various members of the hospital team. Successful Violence Interrupters will demonstrate reliability, creative problem solving, and the ability to complete assigned administrative tasks. Violence Interrupters work with individuals who sustained gunshot wounds and their families. In the incident's immediate aftermath, Violence Interrupters provide emotional support and crisis intervention, including safety planning. They work to decrease retaliatory cycles of violence. While individuals and their families are in the hospital, they continue to provide emotional support and work to engage participants in a long-term Violence Intervention Program aimed at reducing the risk of future violent injury.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Experience working with at risk, gang involved or impacted youth and/or adults is preferred.
  • Personal experience in overcoming violence, incarceration, violence-related injuries, gang involvement, and/or the criminal justice system.
  • Must have minimum of 24 months from release of incarceration.
  • Flexibility to work overnight and weekends
  • Some convictions exclude applicants from working in the hospital.

  • Experience working with at risk, gang involved or impacted youth and/or adults is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Engage with family/friends to interrupt cycle of retaliation
  • Engage with survivors in the Emergency Department and during course of hospitalization and afterwards (by phone) to introduce HBVIP
  • Community event participation and planning (at least 2 events outside of work hours per calendar year)
  • Mentorship check-ins
  • Court Advocacy
  • Participate in scheduled meetings debriefs, and team activities
  • HBVIP weekly group consultations/rounds
