About The Position

The City of Lafayette is seeking a Vinyasa Yoga Instructor to teach classes on Sundays at 9:30 am. The instructor will also be responsible for regularly substituting for classes throughout the week and on weekends. While Vinyasa is the immediate need, instructors with experience in additional yoga styles are encouraged to apply. Requirements

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Must hold current Fitness Certification from an accredited agency (ACE, AFAA or equivalent).
  • Must hold current CPR/AED certification.
  • Working knowledge of human anatomy, kinesiology, and training principles.
  • Thorough knowledge of group fitness teaching strategies including: the incorporation of music, tempo, cueing technique, and rhythm.
  • Ability to plan, organize, instruct, and supervise the assigned program.
  • Ability to control large groups of people.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Ability to remain current on the trends of the fitness industry.
  • Ability to communicate effectively to the participants when teaching skills.
  • Ability to analyze situations quickly and objectively and determine proper course of action.
  • Ability to work with little or no supervision, as necessary.
  • Ability to analyze and correct facility safety hazards.
  • Ability to write incident and accident reports, as necessary.
  • Ability to learn and adhere to the facility emergency procedures.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public.

Nice To Haves

  • Additional specialty/certifications preferred.
  • Previous instructional experience preferred.
  • Additional yoga styles are welcome to apply.

Responsibilities

  • Leads, instructs, and motivates participants in group exercise activities.
  • Teaches scheduled classes, beginning and ending on time; provides adequate warm-up, exercises, stretching, and cool down or teaches to a specific format.
  • Plans class curriculum, and prepares music and appropriate equipment, setting up and taking down equipment as required.
  • Assists patrons, answers questions, and maintains a positive exercise experience for diverse participants with varying skill levels.
  • Provides a safe, effective, and supportive learning environment.
  • Keeps supervisor informed of customer and facility needs.
  • Ensures that safety standards are met, and that department and facility policies are followed.
  • Keeps accurate track of class attendance.
  • Responsible for finding a dependable, appropriate substitute upon their absence.
  • Attends scheduled meetings as required.
  • Performs related duties as required.
