About The Position

The Associated Press seeks a multiplatform video producer with a solid track record of video storytelling to produce daily video in the U.S. East Coast afternoon and evening hours. This newsgathering position is based in Washington, D.C. This specialized role within the bureau is key to our coverage of the White House, Congress and politics, delivering content tailored for newsrooms and digital platforms. In this role, you will work closely with other staffers in the bureau and coordinate with the global video production team to deliver engaging journalism that serves our customers and helps grow AP’s audience. This role is crucial in maintaining AP’s reputation and producing premium videos on some of our most important stories. This is a staff position covered by AP’s agreement with the News Media Guild.

Requirements

  • A demonstrated understanding of Washington politics, strong news judgement and storytelling skills that appeal to digital audiences
  • Advanced-level professional competency in non-linear video editing, preferably with DaVinci Resolve, with a demonstrated ability to use visual effects and graphics to enhance storytelling, improve audience engagement and produce compelling, high-quality video content
  • The ability and willingness to work a schedule normally running from 1:00pm-9:00pm ET on weekdays, and the flexibility to work other hours, including nights and weekends, when news demands.
  • Experience creating content for digital audiences, and a fluency in the variety of audience consumption patterns on different online platforms
  • A track record of identifying trending stories and producing social videos that people will want to share, like and talk about
  • Experience working with and coaching AP reporters to appear on camera for regular, engaging dispatches and debriefs on complex and trending stories
  • A history of working under deadlines and who thrives in a breaking news environment
  • Strong writing skills in English and can write to picture clearly and succinctly
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with the diverse team of journalists at the AP who operate in all formats: text, photo, video, audio, digital/social, interactive and graphics
  • A fluency in pursuing innovative production techniques while consistently maintaining AP’s standards for integrity and objectivity.
  • A bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
  • At least three years of full-time experience at a daily newspaper, video newsroom, online or digital news outlet, or an AP bureau or regional desk.
  • Authorization to work in the United States.
  • Advanced-level professional competency in written and spoken English.

Nice To Haves

  • Professional competency in a language besides English is a plus
  • Familiarity with OSINT visual verification techniques is a distinct plus
  • A proven track record of not only editing content but telling stories which can hook the viewer and break down complex issues in a non-patronizing way, while maintaining our standards and impartiality

Responsibilities

  • Edit breaking news video from live feeds, from AP journalists, from partner and user generated content, on deadline, with a focus on content related to U.S. government and politics
  • Edit story elements quickly and creatively to produce strong visual narratives for newsrooms and digital audiences
  • Produce video edits in a variety of styles including for customer use (Newsroom Ready), as well as for online and social media use, and for use on AP’s digital properties
  • Record regular on-camera dispatches and voice-over for digital video treatments to help explain complex political stories and give context
  • Write relevant storylines and shotlists with speed and accuracy.
  • Must be able to demonstrate a track record and ability to source, verify and clear user generated content
  • Exercise excellent news judgement when making editorial decisions
