Under the direction of a Registered Nurse (RN), the Patient Observer provides constant observation and support to patients who have been identified as a potential risk to themselves or others. The Patient Observer assists with patient-related tasks based on individual needs while maintaining patient confidentiality and following hospital policies and procedures.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent preferred
  • some healthcare experience 0-1 year preferred
  • Ability to remain alert for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to verbally calm patients.
  • Ability to perform calmly and quickly in stressful situations.
  • Ability to read, write and speak English clearly.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain constant observation of assigned patient(s).
  • Monitor patients for changes in behavior or condition and promptly communicate concerns to the RN.
  • Document care and observations as required.
  • Receive and provide detailed handoff information regarding the patient and their status.
  • Assist patients with feeding as directed by the RN.
  • Assist in the event of a patient fall according to hospital procedures.
  • Maintain patient safety, privacy, dignity, and confidentiality at all times.
