About The Position

The Associated Press seeks a nimble, enterprising and digitally focused video journalist. Reporting from the nation’s capital, you’ll have a front-row seat to news related to the federal government, U.S. politics and elections, as well as other news stories from the Washington metropolitan area. We're looking for a creative and innovative visual storyteller to join a team of the industry’s best journalists, delivering coverage that breaks news, has impact and is exclusive to AP. This is a staff position covered by AP’s agreement with the News Media Guild.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience, such as at least two years of full-time news experience as a video journalist at a broadcast station, online or digital news outlet, daily newspaper or an AP bureau.
  • Ability to work in the U.S. or gain permission to do so.
  • Advanced-level professional competency in written and spoken English.
  • Advanced-level professional competency in video shooting and non-linear editing, preferably with Adobe Premiere.

Nice To Haves

  • Professional competency in a language besides English.
  • Expertise in Sony cameras.
  • History of collaborating across formats on breaking news and short- and long-term projects, from start to finish.
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational and planning skills, with the ability to juggle multiple projects across formats and deliver success on complex, challenging story lines.

Responsibilities

  • Shoot, write, edit and produce video, including video geared toward AP’s customers and digital audiences.
  • Help report across formats to help produce a competitive and comprehensive news report for the AP’s customers and audiences on digital, social and broadcast platforms.
  • Jump in on breaking news, as well as pitch, develop and research, collaborating with colleagues to tell stories across formats.
  • Generate distinctive video stories for national and global audiences with an eye for how audiences are consuming news on digital and social platforms.
  • Cover breaking news and be willing to travel, sometimes at short notice.
  • Look for trends, offbeat topics and other subjects that will produce stories that meet the needs of digital audiences.
  • Pursue innovative and inclusive news coverage, experimenting with new digital storytelling forms and approaching every story with ambition.
  • Create motion graphics to enhance storytelling for news events.
  • Maintain AP’s standards for integrity and objectivity.
  • Be responsive to general breaking news as coverage demands – including at night and on weekends – as AP is a 24/7 operation.
