About The Position

This position performs several job functions under the supervision of the Police Sergeant. This individual is responsible for receiving evidence items received at the Police Department and the proper disbursement of all evidence. Excellent communication skills are required to contact internal officers and other related agencies. A general knowledge of laws pertaining to the processing and storing evidence is necessary. This position will also be responsible for collecting and processing digital media evidence, maintaining records and tagging evidence. This position must be trusted to a high level of security, as evidence can be large amounts of money, jewelry and/or drugs to be used to prosecute criminals in court cases. Knowledge of computer-based inventory systems is required.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Minimum two years of experience in police related work or civilian-related fields such as inventory control, computer warehouse operations and maintenance of records and receipts
  • Prior experience in working with audio, video and digital media
  • Knowledge of computerized inventory control software, records management system and Microsoft software including word processing, Excel and Outlook
  • Ability to properly record and distribute inventory
  • Good oral and written communication skills to contact police officers internally, the public and other agencies
  • Understanding of the application and ethics of video evidence for court purposes
  • Ability to operate all general office equipment
  • Ability to troubleshoot basic issues relating to body worn and dash cameras and the related programs
  • Ability to operate and properly extract digital evidence from numerous types of CCTV systems
  • Good report writing skills
  • Knowledge of federal and state laws as they pertain to evidentiary laws and procedures
  • Must pass background check and pre-employment substance abuse screening
  • A motor vehicle record check and job-related doctor's physical exam may also be required
  • Must pass FBI Criminal Justice Information System (CJIS) fingerprint-based criminal background check and maintain CJIS eligibility

Nice To Haves

  • Certification through the Texas Association of Property and Evidence Inventory Technicians (TAPEIT) within one year of hire
