About The Position

The Mayo Clinic Center for Safe and Healthy Children and Adolescents (MCCSHCA) is seeking a Victim Advocate to provide essential advocacy services. This role supports a multidisciplinary team that collaborates on behalf of children who have experienced or witnessed abuse, neglect, or other serious crimes. MCCSHCA is a child-focused and child-friendly center designed to help children feel safe and secure during difficult times. The Victim Advocate will represent and give a voice to affected children and families, working to minimize trauma and promote recovery throughout the child abuse investigation, court processes, and aftermath. This includes conducting needs assessments, ensuring needs are communicated and addressed by the team, providing crisis intervention, emotional support, safety planning, and case management. The advocate will also accompany children and families to legal proceedings when appropriate and assist with documentation in accordance with state and federal regulations. A unique aspect of this role includes serving as a backup handler for MCCSHCA’s Duo Dog after successful completion of training.

Requirements

  • Must have a love of dogs (a plus).
  • Must complete orientation and training requirements.
  • Must have approximately six months of employment to serve as a backup handler for MCCSHCA’s Duo Dog.

Responsibilities

  • Provide essential advocacy services within the Center for Safe and Healthy Children and Adolescents.
  • Represent and give a voice to affected children and families.
  • Minimize child and family trauma and promote recovery throughout the child abuse investigation, court processes, and aftermath.
  • Conduct assessments of individual and cultural needs.
  • Ensure needs are communicated to and addressed by the multidisciplinary team and other service providers.
  • Provide crisis intervention, emotional support, safety planning, and case management throughout the life of the case.
  • Accompany children and families to legal proceedings when appropriate and assist in their preparation.
  • Maintain client documentation in accordance with applicable state and federal regulations.
  • Serve as a backup handler for MCCSHCA’s Duo Dog, helping support a welcoming, comforting, and child-friendly environment for patients and families.
