DCJ Victim & Survivor Services Internship College to County Internship 2026 -Department of Community Justice Pay Rate: $24 per hour Job Type: Temporary College Intern Duration: July 1st through Sept 25th, 2026 (12 weeks, but can extend past 12 weeks if intern works less than 30 hours per week) Hours: up to 30 hours a week Telework: Hybrid (1-2 days per week in person, 1-2 days per week remote) Building Physical Location: 1401 NE 68th Ave, Portland, OR 97213 (most common) 1245 SE 122nd Ave, Portland, OR 97233 (1-3 times per month) 421 SW 5th Ave, Portland, OR 97204 (1-2 times during the internship) 501 SE Hawthorne Blvd, Portland, OR 97214 (for trainings and events) Does This Position Require Driving a County Vehicle? Eligibility requirements and more details found on our College to County website. What Does Victim and Survivor Services (VSS) at the Department of Community Justice (DCJ) Do? The Department of Community Justice provides supervision for adults and youth in Multnomah County. Victim and Survivor Services (VSS) supports people harmed by individuals under DCJ supervision. VSS offers advocacy, emotional support, safety planning, and navigation of the justice system, guided by survivor-led, trauma-informed, and equity values. VSS also provides case notifications, supports victim rights, and works to improve DCJ to better support survivors. Internship Description & Responsibilities: Complete training Shadow Advocates and Records Technicians Prepare letters and informational packets to mail to victims of crimes Make outreach calls to listed victims in cases starting supervision with DCJ Call or text listed victims to notify them of court hearings or other critical events Participate in staff meetings Learning Outcomes: Learn basic advocacy tenets (empowerment model, trauma-informed care, harm reduction, countering oppression, etc.) Gain experience working directly with people who have experienced abuse and violence Gain a basic understanding of the criminal justice system and victim rights Learn about dynamics of violence and oppression, and strategies for healing and dismantling oppression
Requirements
- Candidates should have completed within one year or enrolled in a college/university academic institution.
- Promote a culture of respect, inclusiveness, and appreciation of diverse perspectives, backgrounds, and values ( Link to Equity and Empowerment Lens )
- Interest in working in the criminal justice system or victim/survivor advocacy.
- Good communicator including the ability to write clearly, accurately, and succinctly.
- Ability to learn the department computer systems; computer literate in word processing and Google Suite.
- Ability to both follow directions and work independently.
- Willing and able to listen non-judgementally and support decisions that others make about their life.
- Must pass a thorough background investigation which includes, but is not limited to, a review of applicant’s criminal, civil, driving, military, educational and employment history prior to employment.
