About The Position

Victim Advocate Hours: 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., may vary | Rotating 24-hour on-call coverage required Department: Police - Victim Assistance | Steady in a crisis. Compassionate with people. Ready to help victims find their next step. As a Victim Advocate, you will support people during some of the most difficult moments of their lives. You will provide crisis intervention, guidance, referrals and ongoing advocacy while helping victims navigate the criminal justice process. This role calls for empathy, sound judgment, clear communication and absolute confidentiality.

Requirements

  • Any combination of work experience or academic pursuit equivalent to a Bachelor's Degree in Social Services, Criminal Justice or a related field; OR bilingual with an Associate Degree in one of these fields.
  • A valid Indiana driver's license and the ability to transport victims or respond to community locations when necessary.
  • Knowledge of crisis theory and victim-support practices, with the judgment to work effectively in stressful situations.
  • Ability to assess needs, discuss sensitive personal situations and explain options with patience, tact and respect.
  • Strong case-management, confidential documentation, follow-up and communication skills, including work with law enforcement, courts and social-service professionals.

Nice To Haves

  • Bilingual skills a plus.
  • Knowledge of the criminal justice system, victim service agencies and community resources.

Responsibilities

  • Provide timely crisis intervention, emotional support, safety planning and information about follow-up care.
  • Manage assigned cases, assess needs, make referrals, maintain contact and complete clear, accurate documentation.
  • Explain victims' rights and the criminal justice process, provide case updates and attend court with or on behalf of victims when needed.
  • Participate in rotating 24-hour on-call coverage and respond to hospitals, the CAC, the SATC or crime scenes as needed.
  • Assist with victim compensation, restitution, property return, transportation and community education programs as assigned.
