About The Position

This position is responsible for educating the public, including youth and adults, about healthy vs. unhealthy relationships. The role involves attending and participating in community action team meetings and events, and developing and assisting in the development and implementation of prevention-oriented marketing for the Domestic Violence Program. The advocate will work with children, youth, and their families in the shelter, as well as non-residential survivors as needed. Responsibilities include accepting, orienting, and counseling residents in the domestic violence shelter, with a special focus on assisting children and youth. The position also involves assisting residents on assigned shifts with basic needs, ensuring safety, security, and adherence to house guidelines, and maintaining accurate and complete records and logs. The advocate will also ensure the shelter is maintained in a neat and proper order.

Requirements

  • Associates degree in a human service related field, sociology, psychology, counseling, social work, criminology or related field AND Two years experience working with victims of domestic violence and or sexual assault OR Any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  • Successful completion of Domestic Violence Core Competency training within 90 days of employment.
  • Valid state driver’s license is required.

Responsibilities

  • Develops/implements and maintains a youth community action team.
  • Participates in domestic violence primary prevention initiative planning activities.
  • Ensures house guidelines are understood and followed.
  • Records incidents and notifies supervisor of any special circumstances or unusual problems.
  • Ensures security of facility and participants.
  • Educates the public, to include youth and adults, about healthy vs. unhealthy relationships.
