About The Position

The Hialeah Police Department Victim Advocate Unit employs one intern per college semester. The Victim Advocate Intern will assist the victim advocate unit with office duties such as: filing, faxing, creating notes, emailing information, mailing informational material, etc. Additionally, the intern will build communication skills by contacting victims of crime to inform them of their rights, the criminal justice process and resources available. The intern will gain experience to information on the criminal justice process, victim rights, crisis intervention skills, community resources available to crime victims, safety planning and the victim compensation program. This opportunity best suits students studying criminal justice, social work, psychology and other related fields.

Responsibilities

Client Support; Provide emotional support to victims in-person or over the phone.
Accompany victims to court, hospital, or police stations as appropriate.
Assist with safety planning under supervision.
Resource Coordination: Help clients access services such as shelter, counseling, legal aid, or financial assistance.
Make referrals to community partners or internal resources.
Documentation & Case Management: Maintain accurate, confidential records of client interactions.
Assist in updating case files and inputting data into case management systems.
Crisis Intervention (If Trained and Permitted): Assist in responding to crisis calls or walk-ins under staff supervision.
Help connect victims to emergency resources.
Administrative & Outreach Duties; Answer phones and take messages or screen calls.
Help prepare educational materials or presentations.
Support outreach efforts and awareness campaigns (e.g., Domestic Violence Awareness Month).
Assist with organizing events, trainings, or support groups.
