About The Position

The vice principal will be required to perform a variety of duties to assist the principal in managing overall school site operations, providing instructional leadership, maintaining a safe school environment, coordinating activities, and representing the school within the community. This role involves administrative tasks, supporting instructional programs, promoting equity, and fostering strong relationships with staff, students, parents, and stakeholders.

Requirements

Master's degree from an accredited college or university.
Licensed by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education as a school principal/assistant principal.
A minimum of five (5) years of successful classroom teaching experience.
Previous school leadership experience.
Effective oral and written communication skills.
Able to use and manipulate technology for record keeping, scheduling, communication, data collection, and accountability.
Knowledge of federal, state and local laws and regulations related to school operations and management.
Must be physically able to operate a variety of equipment including computers, copiers, adding machines, etc.
Must be physically able to operate a motor vehicle.
Ability to compare and/or judge the readily observable, functional, structural or composite characteristics of data, people or things.
Ability to speak and/or signal people to convey or exchange information, including giving instructions, assignments or directions to subordinates or assistants.
Ability to read a variety of correspondence, reports, forms, newsletters, schedules, manuals, invoices, requisitions, menus, recipes, journals, etc.
Ability to prepare correspondence, reports, forms, evaluations, procedures, charts, surveys, articles, bid specifications, brochures, news releases, handbooks, budgets, etc., using prescribed formats and conforming to all rules of punctuation, grammar, diction, and style.
Ability to speak before groups of people with poise, voice control and confidence.
Ability to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions; to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagrammatic form; and to deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
Ability to record and deliver information, to explain procedures, to follow oral and written instructions.
Ability to communicate effectively and efficiently in a variety of technical or professional languages including medical, legal, accounting and marketing terminology.
Ability to utilize mathematical formulas; to add and subtract; multiply and divide; utilize decimals and percentages; and to apply the principles of algebra and geometry.
Ability to inspect items for proper length, width and shape.
Ability to coordinate hands and eyes rapidly and accurately in using office equipment.
Ability to handle a variety of items such as office equipment and hand tools.
Minimal levels of eye/hand/foot coordination.
Ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions.
Adaptable to performing under stress and when confronted with emergency situations.
Ability to talk and hear.
Must be able to communicate via telephone.

Responsibilities

Assist the principal in managing overall school site operations in accordance with school, district, DESE and state policies.
Provide instructional leadership to staff.
Maintain an orderly and safe school environment including student discipline.
Coordinate school activities and duties.
Communicate and cooperate with staff, students, administration, parents and stakeholders.
Address issues that impact the school.
Positively represent the school within the community.
Perform additional duties as assigned by the principal or superintendent of schools.
Assist in the development and communication of the educational vision and mission of the school.
Use data to evaluate and revise instructional and operational programs.
Encourage the use of appropriate instructional techniques and technologies.
Prepare professional development plans that positively impact student achievement.
Understand and implement principles of mentoring and coaching.
Develop, promote and implement actions that advance concepts of high student achievement.
Implement sound methods of personnel selection, supervision, and evaluation.
Identify and evaluate instruction using the district adopted curriculum guidelines and evaluation tool.
Use and manipulate technology for record keeping, scheduling, communication, data collection, and accountability.
Provide input on methods to improve instructional programs.
Support the implementation of standards-based classrooms.
Communicate effectively and consistently with the principal and administration.
Promote educational practices and programs that address the needs and abilities of all students.
Promote and model the concept that effort, attendance and hard work are key factors in student achievement.
Support the use of intervention services and special education services for students.
Hold high academic expectations for all students.
Hold teachers, students and self to high standards of performance and behavior.
Assist the principal in developing the vision, goals, school improvement plans and programs for the school/district.
Promote partnerships, involvement and understanding among staff, families, community and other stakeholders.
Be familiar with the range of instructional programs, practices, policies and beliefs that promote student achievement.
Implement multiple strategies to increase student performance.
Understand organizational change, school-based management and school restructuring.
Promote and participate in community outreach and PTO.
Actively participate in professional organizations.
