About The Position

The Vice President, Student Life (Interim) is responsible for advancing student engagement, campus spirit, and holistic wellbeing through the strategic development and delivery of events, orientation programming, first-year initiatives, and mental health supports. The VP Student Life provides operational stewardship of the Student Life portfolio, working collaboratively with AMS teams, UBC partners, and campus organizations to foster inclusive opportunities for connection and community. This position is managed by the AMS President, who oversees the day-to-day activities of the Executive to ensure the effective fulfillment of their duties and responsibilities.

Requirements

  • Must be a currently registered student at UBC Vancouver or one of its affiliated colleges
  • Knowledge of AMS clubs and constituencies
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Strong organizational skills and detail orientated
  • Experience in event organization or coordination
  • Comfort in working in a technical environment
  • Professional conduct
  • Ability to work independently, under pressure and meeting deadlines
  • Advanced knowledge of computer and technological skills

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of AMS fiscal procedures and policies is an asset

Responsibilities

  • Advise on and assist with the execution of the events and mental health programming of the AMS, and to aid in the organization of AMS FirstWeek and campus-wide orientations programming.
  • Assist subsidiary organizations (Clubs, Constituencies, and Resource Groups) with their events and social programming through the development of training sessions and events guides.
  • Liaise with non-Society campus groups (Residence Hall Association, Thunderbird Athlete’s Council, Greek Life, etc.) to promote campus spirit, athletics and recreation, and a greater spirit of co-operation between campus groups.
  • Coordinate the orientation and first-year engagement programming of the Society, including collaboration with the Constituencies and non-Society campus groups.
  • Coordinate with the relevant UBC departments to ensure the AMS is actively engaging with first year orientation and athletics and recreation.
  • Coordinate a competition or series of competitions held between the Society's Constituencies known as the Inter-Faculty Cup.
  • Serve as the Chair of the Vice-President Student Life Caucus.
  • Be well versed in all University policies and procedures related to events on Campus, and all BC Liquor Laws and procedures related to obtaining Liquor Licenses on Campus.
  • Represent the Society on the University Sport and Recreation Committee.
  • Hire, onboard, train and manage student staff within the portfolio.
  • Manage the Office of the Vice-President Student Life budget, ensuring variance tracking.
  • Works within the AMS mission statement and values, operating a successful department.
  • Present options and recommendations to Council regarding policies or plans that are related to the mandate of the Vice President Student Life.
  • Other duties as outlined in AMS Code and Bylaws, and as assigned by Council or the Executive Committee from time to time.
