Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Safety Management, Transportation, Business Administration, Risk Management, Occupational Health and Safety, or a related field required.
  • Minimum of 10 years of progressive leadership experience in transportation safety, fleet safety, risk management, claims management, or related operational leadership.
  • Minimum of 5 years of senior leadership experience within trucking, transportation, logistics, or the Less-Than-Truckload (LTL) industry.
  • Demonstrated experience managing insurance programs, claims administration, broker/carrier relationships, and enterprise risk management initiatives.
  • Proven ability to reduce accident frequency, injury rates, claims costs, insurance expense, and overall risk exposure.
  • Strong knowledge of FMCSA, DOT, OSHA, and transportation-related safety and compliance requirements.
  • Strong understanding of commercial transportation insurance, underwriting processes, claims management, risk financing, and loss control.
  • Experience with workers’ compensation, auto liability, cargo liability, general liability, property, and umbrella/excess insurance programs.
  • Ability to interpret safety, operational, claims, and insurance data and convert findings into actionable improvement plans.
  • Excellent executive communication, leadership, negotiation, presentation, and change management skills.
  • Strong business acumen with the ability to balance safety, compliance, service performance, cost control, and operational practicality.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, safety management systems, claims platforms, and transportation technology tools.
  • Ability to travel regularly to terminals, operating facilities, accident investigation sites, customer locations, and industry events.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree preferred.
  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Associate in Risk Management (ARM), Certified Director of Safety (CDS), or comparable credential.
  • Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) knowledge or transportation operations experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute the company’s overall safety, fleet safety, and risk management strategy in alignment with business goals and operational priorities.
  • Lead programs that promote a strong culture of safety for drivers, dock employees, maintenance personnel, terminal leadership, and administrative employees.
  • Oversee policies, procedures, and best practices for safe LTL operations, including pickup and delivery, linehaul, dock, equipment, maintenance, and terminal operations.
  • Monitor and support compliance with applicable FMCSA, DOT, OSHA, EPA, and state/local transportation safety requirements.
  • Direct accident prevention initiatives and analyze safety performance metrics, including crash frequency, preventability, injuries, claims trends, CSA-related indicators, and loss experience.
  • Oversee vehicle accident investigations, root cause analysis, corrective action plans, driver accountability, and follow-up training recommendations.
  • Manage driver qualifications, onboarding, safety training, defensive driving, hazardous materials awareness, and ongoing transportation compliance programs.
  • Partner with Operations, Maintenance, Human Resources, Legal, and Terminal Leadership to identify risk exposures and implement practical, sustainable safety solutions.
  • Establish company-wide safety goals, scorecards, audit processes, and key performance indicators to measure and improve safety performance.
  • Lead terminal safety audits, facility inspections, regulatory readiness reviews, and corrective action tracking across the network.
  • Direct the management of workers’ compensation, auto liability, cargo, general liability, property, and other claims in partnership with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Lead enterprise risk management efforts by identifying, assessing, prioritizing, and mitigating operational, financial, regulatory, and reputational risks.
  • Manage relationships with insurance brokers, carriers, third-party administrators, risk consultants, and other external partners.
  • Lead annual insurance renewal strategy, underwriting submissions, loss reviews, and negotiations to secure appropriate and cost-effective insurance coverage.
  • Analyze loss runs, claims activity, insurance trends, and operational data to develop strategies that reduce total cost of risk.
  • Prepare and present executive-level reports on safety performance, claims activity, risk exposure, insurance program effectiveness, and improvement plans.
  • Develop and manage departmental budgets for safety, claims, insurance, risk management, training, and related programs.
  • Lead, coach, and develop safety and risk management team members while fostering accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
  • Support acquisitions, new terminal openings, operational expansion, customer requirements, and special projects from a safety and risk management perspective.
  • Serve as the organization’s primary liaison during safety-related regulatory audits, inspections, claims reviews, and related legal matters.
  • Represent the company in transportation safety, risk management, insurance, and industry association forums.
  • Support business continuity, crisis management, emergency response planning, and incident response efforts.
  • Participate in customer meetings, internal leadership meetings, safety committees, and industry events as needed.
  • Remain current on emerging transportation safety trends, regulatory developments, technology solutions, and industry best practices.
  • Perform other duties consistent with the scope and level of the position.
