Vice President of Engineering

Pax8
$240,000 - $270,000Remote

About The Position

This role is responsible for leading and scaling the building of Pax8’s financial technology platform, which is the mission-critical infrastructure that powers every financial transaction on the Pax8 marketplace across multiple lines of business for SaaS, AI, and agentic / digital labor. This platform must deliver predictable, automated, and reconciled daily financial processing and monthly billing cycles for $xxB GTV, upholding global public enterprise standards for audit, compliance, and financial data integrity from GAAP/IFRS and SOX to PCI DSS and e-invoicing — while never constraining Pax8's startup velocity. They will lead engineering for extensible platform capabilities, such as usage, billing, reconciliation, and settlement; SaaS, AI, and digital labor fulfillment; configuration, pricing, and subscription management; and AI token monetization, supply-demand optimization, rate management, balance accounting, and financial settlement. These systems are denominated in both global currencies and AI tokens, serving both the SaaS and AI / agentic economies. They will partner with leaders across Pax8 functions, especially with Finance and Operations teams, to ensure smooth execution for all financial processes. They care for the technical, cultural, and human aspects of building, growing, and strengthening this mission-critical financial infrastructure.

  • Prior experience satisfying global public company compliance obligations is strongly preferred
  • Deep expertise in EDA / event-sourced / CQRS architectures, including: designing immutable event stores, projection systems, idempotency guarantees, and time-travel query capabilities at platform scale
  • Strong command of financial systems design including double-entry accounting models, ledger architecture, billing engine, and third-party integrations
  • Experience with subscription lifecycle management including plan versioning, usage-based and dimensional pricing, metered billing, mid-cycle amendments, and promotional mechanics such as coupons and credit grants
  • Experience with AI token commerce, including token issuance and exchange rate management, consumption tracking against token balances, and the financial settlement of AI inference costs at marketplace scale
  • Expertise in API architecture for financial platforms spanning event-driven messaging, REST, GraphQL, and developer ecosystem enablement across billing, commerce configuration, and AI monetization domains
  • Deep understanding and commitment to software engineering practices/processes (e.g., Lean, Agile, DevOps, CI/CD, TDD, XP) and continuous improvement through measurement
  • Ability to create new and better ways for the organization to be successful
  • Ability to build strong partner and stakeholder relationships, translating external needs and commercial priorities into platform decisions

  • Must hold valid right to work in USA.

Nice To Haves

  • Bring your experience — not perfection
  • We encourage you to apply even if you don't meet 100% of the criteria. We're committed to diverse perspectives, inclusive hiring and sharing your transferrable skills.

Responsibilities

  • Own the technical vision and delivery roadmap for the financial platform, including APIs and AI enablement (MCP, skills, context, and memory) that serve external stakeholders and power internal teams across multiple lines of business. Incorporate agentic commerce standards, such as A2A.
  • Lead cross-functional partnership with Product, Finance, Operations, and commercial teams to ensure the financial systems align with Pax8’s marketplace growth and partner ecosystem priorities.
  • Communicate technical strategy cascaded from executive leadership across the Engineering organization.
  • Partner deeply with Product leadership to ensure technical foundations align with commercial priorities and partner needs.
  • Translate strategy into phased execution guided by observable metrics. Lead quarterly OKR planning for the Fintech engineering organization, setting outcome-driven team goals with clear leading indicators (DORA metrics, SLO attainment, defect escape rate) and lagging business indicators (billing accuracy, settlement reliability, revenue impact).
  • Establish and maintain governance standards and evaluation frameworks for financial data integrity, compliance posture, and system resilience.
  • Serve as single-threaded leader and internal champion for Fintech engineering, continuing cultural and process evolution.
  • Ensure the financial platform meets global public company compliance obligations, across applicable regulatory and policy domains: financial accounting and reporting (e.g. GAAP/IFRS, SOX, ASC606, Germany HGB, France Comptable Général), security & trust (e.g. PCI DSS, SOC 2, ISO 27001, UK Cyber Essentials); multi-jurisdictional tax (e.g. VAT, GST, US sales tax, and equivalent digital services taxes); privacy (e.g. GDPR, CCPA, CPPA, Australian APP); and structured e-invoicing (e.g. EN 16931, PEPPOL BIS Billing 3.0, Italy SdI, Germany XRechnung, France Factur-X, and Poland KSeF).
  • Partner with Legal, Finance, and Security to maintain audit trail integrity, immutability guarantees, and segregation-of-duties controls. Champion Pax8 AI Policy v1.0 requirements.
  • Own the architectural evolution of event sourced, CQRS-based transaction processing systems. Define and evolve standards for distributed systems patterns. Guide the integration architecture with external systems such as payment processors, tax engines, FX, and token exchange. Balance rapid capability delivery with long-term engineering excellence and operational reliability.
  • Lead ecosystem and external developer enablement for the Fintech platform, including: user-facing API surfaces for billing, subscription management, and AI token commerce; developer documentation and SDK quality; and collaboration with ecosystem partners as Pax8 opens additional financial platform capabilities to our external developer ecosystem.

  • Manage and direct the Engineering teams through Directors, Managers, and other direct reports (e.g., hiring, coaching, developing, evaluating). Defend and grow diversity within the team, seek out new and quiet voices, while growing our culture to a global standard.
  • Own the annual engineering budget, including headcount planning, capex/opex allocation, and resource deployment across teams; maintain cost-to-serve visibility across billing infrastructure, compliance tooling, and platform operations; and bring trade-off recommendations to executive leadership as priorities shift.
  • Care for professional development opportunities within the organization, both internally and externally. Build an internal pipeline to grow best-in-class engineers with depth in financial systems, event-sourced architecture, and commerce platform design. Scale our engineering organization and provide coaching and mentoring for current leaders, inspiring them with a compelling vision and strategy and by recruiting additional top technical and leadership talent with financial systems depth.
