About The Position

The Vice President of Operations is a senior leadership role responsible for leading the successful execution of commercial construction projects within the assigned Strategic Business Unit (SBU). This position provides strategic and operational oversight to ensure projects are delivered safely, profitably, on schedule, and in alignment with Layton’s standards for quality, client service, and predictable outcomes. This leader partners closely with executive leadership, business development, preconstruction, project teams, and field leadership to support the full project lifecycle from pursuit and planning through execution and closeout. The Vice President of Operations is accountable for building strong operational teams, developing future leaders, strengthening client and trade partner relationships, improving project delivery practices, and supporting sustainable business unit growth. This role provides leadership to operations personnel, including Construction Managers, Project Executives, Project Managers, Superintendents, Project Engineers, and other project support staff.

Requirements

  • 20+ years of progressive experience in the commercial construction industry, including significant experience leading vertical construction projects.
  • 10+ years of leadership experience overseeing project teams, field operations, or business unit operations.
  • Demonstrated success leading complex commercial construction projects across multiple market sectors.
  • Strong understanding of the full construction lifecycle, including preconstruction, estimating, scheduling, procurement, field operations, project management, financial controls, closeout, and client relations.
  • Proven ability to lead, develop, and hold accountable high-performing construction teams.
  • Strong financial and business acumen, including experience reviewing project budgets, forecasts, cost reports, change management, and profit preservation strategies.
  • Experience managing project risk, contract requirements, client expectations, and operational challenges.
  • Strong knowledge of construction safety, quality control, scheduling, project controls, and field execution.
  • Ability to build strong relationships with owners, architects, engineers, trade partners, vendors, and internal teams.
  • Excellent communication, presentation, negotiation, and conflict resolution skills.
  • Strong executive presence with the ability to influence internal and external stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to make sound decisions in a fast-paced, deadline-driven construction environment.
  • Ability to balance strategic leadership with hands-on operational involvement when needed.
  • High level of integrity, professionalism, judgment, and commitment to company values.

Responsibilities

  • Model and reinforce Layton’s commitment to Constructing with Integrity through honesty, unity, safety, and quality.
  • Provide executive-level leadership and oversight for commercial construction projects from preconstruction through project closeout.
  • Lead, coach, and develop operations teams to ensure strong project planning, execution, communication, and accountability.
  • Partner with preconstruction and business development teams during project pursuits, including input on project strategy, staffing, constructability, scheduling, risk, and client expectations.
  • Ensure projects are properly planned and positioned for success before construction begins, including review of budgets, schedules, staffing plans, logistics, contract requirements, and project risks.
  • Monitor project performance across the business unit, including safety, quality, schedule, financial performance, client satisfaction, staffing, and risk management.
  • Support project teams in identifying and resolving significant operational challenges, client concerns, subcontractor issues, staffing needs, and project risks.
  • Provide oversight and guidance to help preserve project profitability and support financial performance of the business unit.
  • Promote strong safety leadership and ensure project teams are actively supporting Layton’s safety expectations and culture.
  • Drive consistency in operational processes, project controls, communication standards, and execution practices across assigned teams and projects.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with owners, architects, engineers, consultants, trade partners, vendors, and industry contacts.
  • Support contract review, negotiation, and risk evaluation in partnership with executive leadership, legal, preconstruction, and project teams.
  • Collaborate with business unit leadership to forecast staffing needs, evaluate team capacity, and align resources with current and future project demands.
  • Mentor and develop operational leaders, including succession planning, performance coaching, and career development for key talent.
  • Promote accountability within project teams while creating an environment of trust, teamwork, and continuous improvement.
  • Remain current on commercial construction trends, market conditions, delivery methods, labor availability, subcontractor capacity, and operational best practices.
  • Represent Layton professionally with clients, partners, community members, and industry organizations.
  • Support strategic planning for the business unit, including growth goals, operational priorities, talent needs, client relationships, and market opportunities.
  • Partner with executive leadership to ensure sustainable growth while maintaining Layton’s standards for safety, quality, profitability, and client satisfaction.
