About The Position

The Vice President of Government and Community Relations will support NYCEDC’s efforts to advance equitable economic development across the five boroughs. The role operates under the direction of the Senior Vice President of Government and Community Relations and within an assigned portfolio, has wide latitude for initiative and judgement. The role requires strong political acumen, strategic thinking and the ability to navigate intertwined government and community relationships. The Vice President will translate complex land use, policy and development initiatives into clear and compelling communications for NYCEDC’s senior leadership, elected officials, community leaders, and key stakeholders, while helping build and maintain strong relationships that support NYCEDC’s mission and projects.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in a related field (e.g., political science, public policy, or communications)
  • Minimum of 7 years of experience working with elected officials, public agencies, campaigns, and/or community-based organizations
  • Experience with New York City land use policies, procedures, and public approval processes
  • Experience managing and coaching staff
  • Clear and effective written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to anticipate challenges and develop practical, creative solutions
  • Strategic and analytical thinker with the ability to build consensus among diverse stakeholders on complex projects
  • High level of attention to detail and organization, with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced, evolving environment
  • Ability to travel throughout the five boroughs and attend evening meetings as needed
  • New York City residency required within 180 days of hire

  • Experience advancing and staffing a principal preferred, ideally within government or for an elected official

Responsibilities

  • Work with the GovCo team and the External Affairs division to develop and implement comprehensive engagement plans.
  • Develop, implement and oversee comprehensive engagement strategies to advance NYCEDC’s policies and priorities about NYCEDC’s Brooklyn-based and citywide transportation projects, and other areas and initiatives as assigned
  • Engage in high level negotiations around ULURP and points of agreements for key projects
  • Oversee the creation and delivery of PowerPoint presentations, memos or strategic plans for key stakeholders (e.g. EDC senior staff, City Hall, elected officials, community boards, community-based organizations and other external partners).
  • Build relationships with key stakeholders across the organization and other city agencies to support the team’s objectives and outcomes.
  • Work with leadership at NYCEDC and City Hall to present recommendations and provide strategic guidance.
  • Communicate in a way that is sensitive to different audiences and present information and recommendations in a clear, concise manner.
  • Prepare leadership for meetings, hearings, public testimony, and high-level stakeholder engagements
  • Identify and proactively manage emerging issues, vulnerabilities, and opportunities affecting NYCEDC
  • Manage and coach assigned employees; ensure employees are oriented to their position and provided with appropriate training, development, and continuing education on an ongoing basis.
