About The Position

The Vice President, Global Energy Origination & Structuring Power is responsible for leading a global team of energy experts that will be on the cutting edge of securing cost-effective, reliable, and innovative power solutions to power Equinix data centers across the globe. This role encompasses oversight of all commercial aspects of identifying, due diligence, and advancing new powered-land opportunities; identifying new opportunities to source power globally, managing relationships with utility providers and independent power producers, and ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements. The Vice President, Development & Innovation will drive front end initiatives to secure innovative, reliable, and cost-effective power solutions to serve our data center customers reliably and sustainably into the future.

Requirements

  • Strategic visionary with a deep understanding of energy markets, regulatory environments, and sustainability practices
  • Strong understanding of energy systems, carbon free and renewable technologies, conventional generation assets, transmission system and capacity market dynamics, and sustainability practices
  • Strong negotiation skills, with experience in managing complex contracts and relationships with suppliers, regulatory bodies and partners
  • Skilled at building relationships cross-functionally, orchestrating Energy activities across the enterprise to deliver value and anticipate the customer needs
  • Demonstrated ability to create an environment of innovation, growth, and improvement at scale
  • 12+ years' experience in energy management, energy procurement, or related fields, with significant experience building and leading energy initiatives for data center companies
  • Proven track record in driving large-scale energy strategies across multiple regions, including carbon free and renewable energy initiatives, infrastructure development, wholesale power transactions, and co-siting/onsite power generation
  • Experience in data center operations, utilities, or a similar mission-critical environment
  • Strong financial acumen and experience managing large-scale budgets for global organizations
  • Excellent cross-functional leadership and influencing skills, with the ability to drive results through collaboration across diverse teams
  • Strong people leadership skills, with demonstrated success in developing future leaders and managing globally dispersed teams

Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute energy procurement strategy across Equinix’s global markets to serve our short-, mid-, and long-term power needs for retail and xScale businesses, with a specific focus on new powered land opportunities, ensuring cost effective and reliable electricity supply, with emphasis on advancing energy innovation initiatives to advance our business and the electricity markets
  • Oversee global energy procurement for new Equinix data center locations globally, including the negotiation of power purchase agreements (PPAs), or other such agreements, to secure reliable and cost-effective energy.
  • Identify and leverage strategic partnerships with energy suppliers, utilities, and renewable energy developers to support the company’s growth
  • Lead a team that will commercially evaluate the business need for co-siting or on-site power generation in applicable global markets; ensuring the lowest cost of service that will ensure long term reliability and cost certainty for Equinix Customers
  • Integrate renewable and carbon free energy programs into energy solutions across the global data center portfolio and drive initiatives to enhance the company’s energy resilience.
  • Lead commercial engagements with next generation energy technology providers to create long term energy supply solutions
  • Ensure that our power first strategy and innovation work drives the lowest cost, highest quality service for Equinix Customers
  • Engage across the Energy team and with Equinix stakeholders to ensure Equinix has a robust global pipeline of power capacity to meet future demand from Equinix customers
  • Engage with external stakeholders, including energy suppliers, regulators, and sustainability organizations, to promote the company’s energy initiatives and commitments
  • As a senior member of the Global Energy team, this leader will work with other senior leaders to inspire a global team, fostering a high-performance culture with a focus on accountability, agility and innovation.
