About The Position

The Vice President, Finance & Planning (F&P) is a senior financial leader responsible for shaping and stewarding the organization’s financial strategy, integrity, and long‑term sustainability. As a trusted partner to the CEO and Senior Management Team (SMT), this role brings together financial oversight, planning, and analysis to deliver a clear, forward‑looking financial narrative that supports organization wide decision‑making. This position plays a critical role in ensuring the organization operates with strong financial discipline while advancing its mission in a complex environment. The VP, F&P builds credibility with the Board and Audit Committee, strengthens internal financial capabilities, and enables thoughtful trade‑offs through high‑quality financial insight.

Requirements

  • 10+ years of progressive senior financial and planning leadership experience, ideally within a mission‑driven or restricted-fund environment.
  • Extensive experience in the charitable or not‑for‑profit sector is required.
  • Professional finance and accounting CPA designation in good standing required
  • Several years of experience in organizational financial planning, forecasting, and scenario analysis across multi‑year horizons.
  • Deep expertise in financial management, reporting, and governance, including internal controls, audits, and regulatory compliance.
  • Proven ability to translate complex financial data into clear, compelling insights for non‑financial audiences and senior leaders.
  • Experience presenting to or partnering with Boards and/or Audit Committees, with demonstrated credibility and sound judgment.
  • Demonstrated success in building, developing, and leading high‑performing teams, with a collaborative and capability‑building mindset.
  • Strong understanding of restricted and unrestricted funding models and their implications for financial strategy.

Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic financial leadership, translating organizational strategies and priorities into integrated, multiyear financial plans and actionable insights.
  • Oversee the organization’s financial health, including stewardship of restricted and unrestricted funds, ensuring sustainability and alignment with mission objectives.
  • Ensure strong financial practices are maintained including managing internal controls, audit readiness, and externally adhering to governance standards, CRA compliance, and funder agreements.
  • Lead oversight of accounting, financial reporting, treasury, and investment activities to ensure accuracy, transparency, and accountability.
  • Establish and maintain a high quality financial planning, forecasting, scenario analysis framework, and multi-year outlooks.
  • Ensure F&P responsibilities, modeling, forecasting, scenario analysis, and restricted/unrestricted fund coverage all have clear ownership, predictable cadence, and standards within each division of the organization.
  • Deliver clear, concise, and Board‑ready financial reporting and narratives, building trust and credibility with the Audit Committee and Board of Directors.
  • Collaborate with SMT to identify, assess, and provide guidance on how to manage their division’s core financial risks, including liquidity, restricted and unrestricted fund balances, internal control and fraud risk, audit and compliance exposure, as well as treasury and investment risk.
  • Provide forward‑looking financial insights to the CEO, SMT, non-financial leaders and the Board regarding resource allocation, and sustainability planning.
  • Provide oversight for the Conservation Operations team, who are responsible for day-to-day budgeting, financial administration, and grant administration for all Conservation teams.
  • Act as the escalation point for the Specialist, Procurement & Contracts for complex issues, ensuring policies and practices are adhered to.
  • Lead, mentor, and develop a high‑performing Finance and Planning team, building capability, reviewing processes and continuously making updates and improvements, and reducing reliance on single‑point expertise.
  • Strengthen financial planning discipline across the organization by implementing predictable cycles and improving the quality and consistency of outputs.
  • Lead SMT through the annual budgeting process, ensuring teams work collectively towards unified, high-impact financial goals, while maximizing the impact of limited resources through cross-functional collaboration.
  • Contribute to broader organizational priorities and initiatives, supporting the overall success of the department and mission.
