About The Position

The Building Industry Association of Washington (BIAW) is the voice of the residential construction industry in the state of Washington, representing nearly 8,000 home builders, remodelers, and their associates. We're seeking a dynamic and experienced Vice President of External Affairs to lead and execute our organization’s advocacy and political activities. Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree (required)
  • 7+ years of directing government affairs, external affairs, advocacy program and Washington State lobbying experience (required)
  • Flexible and nimble
  • Strategic and creative thinking and problem-solving
  • Self-starter
  • Familiarity with Washington RCWs and WACs
  • Team player
  • Ability to delegate

Responsibilities

  • Supervise all legislative advocacy; ensure BIAW’s strategy to advance housing policy in the Legislature is executed effectively.
  • Supervise all agency advocacy; ensure BIAW is engaged in rulemakings that impact the homebuilding industry at agencies like LNI, DOE, DOR, DNR, SBCC, ESD, DOT
  • Supervise activities to inform and educate BIAW members as to laws, rules, and policies impacting their business practices
  • Facilitate industry and coalition partner relationships
  • Oversee BIAW’s engagement with government at Legislature and state agencies
  • Expand opportunities to utilize partnerships to achieve BIAW’s overall policy goals
  • Engage, attend and coordinate (as appropriate) meetings and events to expand BIAW’s influence on public policy
  • Engage and invest to elect BIAW-supported candidates through direct support and other electioneering communications
  • Lead BIAW’s candidate recruitment and candidate training; maintain and update political training materials; develop additional coursework to achieve election success
  • Recruit, support and partner with other organizations with similar policy and election outcome goals
  • Oversee reports and data research pertinent to BIAW’s policies and policy objectives
  • Ensure reputable and trustworthy data is being utilized
  • Utilize organization’s research to further BIAW policy goals and member interests at all levels of government
  • Work to make BIAW the trusted resource on housing and housing construction data
  • Coordinate and staff BIAW members committees as assigned, such as Washington Affordable Housing Council and Build-PAC.
  • Oversee the staff coordination of the Legislative Policy Committee
