About The Position

The American Medical Association (AMA) is seeking a Vice President, Business Development for its Career Advancement Collective team. This hybrid role, based in Chicago, IL, requires three days a week in the office. The position will be responsible for building and executing the business development strategy for career and education products and services within the AMA Career Advancement Collective (CAC) and the AMA Ed Hub platform. Key responsibilities include identifying and developing new business opportunities, strategic partnerships, and revenue-generating initiatives. The role involves collaborating with stakeholders to expand market presence, strengthen partner relationships, and support long-term organizational objectives. The Vice President will provide strategic leadership, oversee pipeline development, and ensure alignment with the AMA's mission, goals, and operational capabilities. This includes planning, executing, and forecasting growth initiatives, overseeing strategic planning and operations for CAC business units, and maximizing operational effectiveness. Progress against goals will be measured, monitored, and reported.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in business, marketing, communications, or a health-related field required.
  • Minimum 15+ years of experience in business development, partnership development, or strategic growth leadership, with prior experience in a senior leadership or executive-level role required.
  • 10+ years experience in people management required; able to attach and develop talent required.
  • Proven ability to develop and implement strategic short and long-term plans.
  • Management experience in healthcare, education, and/or technology, with success in developing and executing growth strategies that drive measurable revenue or market expansion.
  • Experience developing and expanding relationships with healthcare industry partners and managing complex, strategic accounts, including interaction with C-suite leaders.
  • Proven success using professional sales methodologies, such as strategic or consultative selling, with large client groups.
  • Strong expertise in building business cases using market research, cost/benefit analysis, and risk assessment to support go/no-go recommendations.
  • Strong experience leading negotiations, contract development, and complex deal structuring, including enterprise-level partnerships or multi-year strategic initiatives.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, presentation, and relationship management skills, with the ability to clearly articulate complex concepts to senior executives.
  • Strong analytical, financial, and strategic planning capabilities, with proven ability to lead cross-functional collaboration and drive results in a fast-paced environment.
  • Results-oriented, highly organized, and detail-oriented, with strong problem-solving skills, proficiency in Salesforce.
  • Some travel required.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement a comprehensive business development strategy that supports organizational growth, revenue targets, pricing models, and market expansion.
  • Collaborate with executive leadership and other stakeholders to align business development priorities with organizational strategy, financial goals, and operational capacity.
  • Identify, evaluate, and pursue new business opportunities, partnerships, contracts, and strategic alliances.
  • Establish and maintain strong relationships with clients, partners, stakeholders, and industry leaders.
  • Research and analyze market trends, competitor activity, customer needs, and emerging opportunities to inform strategic decision-making.
  • Represent the organization at conferences, networking events, meetings, and other engagements as needed.
  • Lead the business development pipeline from opportunity identification through negotiation, closing, and transition to product delivery or partner management teams.
  • Direct proposal development, presentations, pricing strategy, and contract negotiations to secure new business.
  • Develop and manage business development budget to optimize resource allocation and achieve strategic objectives.
  • Track and report on key performance indicators, pipeline health, win rates, and revenue forecasts; analyze key statistics to determine business growth projections and potential, and provide regular updates to the executive team.
  • Partner with sales, marketing, product, and operations teams and vendors to refine messaging and deliver solutions that meet the needs of customers.
  • Provide management oversight of CAC planning and business operations.
  • Lead, mentor, and provide management oversight for staff.
  • Responsible for setting objectives, evaluating employee performance, and fostering a collaborative team environment.
  • Responsible for developing staff knowledge and skills to support career development.
  • May include other responsibilities as assigned.
