About The Position

Union College, a nationally recognized, distinguished liberal arts college, seeks an exceptional Vice Dean of Admissions to oversee critical elements of the recruitment and admission process and provide general leadership within the Office of Admissions. Reporting to the Associate Vice President & Dean of Admissions with general guidance from the Vice President for Enrollment Management, the Vice Dean is a full-time, regionally-based position in California. The Vice Dean of Admissions has personal responsibility for managing a major portion of student recruitment on the West Coast. The Vice Dean leads the application review process, the athletics admission process, and travel management, as well as other duties which may be appropriate for a regionally-based leadership position. Most duties are conducted remotely from the Vice Dean’s home base in California, but the Vice Dean will periodically travel to campus for leadership meetings, admissions programs, and planning retreats. The successful candidate will be a respected admissions professional who combines strategic thinking, sound judgment, exceptional relationship-building skills, and a passion for liberal arts education. They will thrive working independently while serving as an influential member of a collaborative leadership team.

Requirements

  • Possess a bachelor’s degree, with an advanced degree strongly preferred.
  • Minimum of ten years of progressively responsible experience in selective college admissions, including significant experience recruiting students throughout California and the broader West Coast.
  • Experience managing a selective application review process and an athletics admission process for a successful athletics program.
  • Experience using Slate to support recruitment strategy, communication, and data-informed decision making.
  • Lead and mentor others with outstanding communication skills, innovative thinking, a data-driven mindset, and positive energy.

Responsibilities

  • Exercise exceptional leadership abilities to support and engender a sense of camaraderie among an admissions team.
  • Foster collaboration, mentor colleagues, and contribute to the professional development of admissions staff through coaching, training, and sharing best practices.
  • Identify ways to manage and optimize the Admissions Office budget through resourcefulness and maximization of the individual and collective strengths of the staff.
  • Represent Union to internal and external audiences through panels, conferences, and professional organizations.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to broad diversity and to promoting a sense of belonging on campus for all students regardless of their background.
  • Advise the office on vendor management and assessment, including identification of new student sources and opportunities.
  • Play a pivotal role in fostering collaboration and building partnerships both on and off campus.
  • Represent Union’s Admissions Office to the college counseling community; strengthen relationships and ensure effective communication with college counselors; engage through forums, panels, and other outreach initiatives.
  • Serve as the primary admissions partner for Union’s athletics recruitment and admission processes, collaborating with coaches, faculty athletic representatives, and enrollment leaders to support institutional enrollment goals.
  • Through occasional committee work and a willingness to build relationships, reach out as a partner to faculty, staff, students, and alumni.
  • Ensure resources and prioritization are given to objective data reporting, analysis, and evaluation of admission initiatives.
  • Utilize data-driven analyses to inform recruitment activities.
  • Appreciate and utilize technology to ensure systems and processes are aligned to effectively communicate with constituencies and to evaluate processes.
