About The Position

The Vice Chancellor and General Counsel serves as the chief legal officer of North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University and provides strategic legal leadership and counsel to the Chancellor, Board of Trustees, and senior executive leadership. Reporting directly to the Chancellor, the Vice Chancellor and General Counsel is responsible for the delivery, coordination, and oversight of all legal services affecting the University, and serves as a liaison between the University and its related and affiliated entities on legal and policy issues. The Vice Chancellor and General Counsel provides advice on matters of governance, institutional risk, compliance, contracts, employment, student affairs, research, and public records, and serves as a trusted advisor on issues with significant legal, financial, reputational, and operational implications. The position performs highly complex and sophisticated legal work and exercises broad discretion and independent judgment in advising University leadership. The Vice Chancellor and General Counsel serves as the University’s principal legal liaison with the Office of the Attorney General of North Carolina and works collaboratively with the UNC System Office and peer institutions across the University of North Carolina System.

Requirements

  • Juris Doctor degree from an ABA -accredited law school.
  • Minimum of ten (10) years of progressively responsible legal experience, preferably in higher education, public sector, or complex institutional environments.
  • Demonstrated experience advising senior executives or governing boards on complex legal and policy matters.
