The Department of Medicine at Boston Medical Center and Boston University Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine is seeking a Vice Chair of Research, Basic & Translational Science to provide strategic leadership for its discovery research enterprise. This individual will guide the development and execution of a department-wide vision that advances high-impact basic and translational science, strengthens national competitiveness, and accelerates the translation of scientific discoveries into clinical innovation. In close partnership with the Vice Chair of Research for Clinical and Implementation Sciences, this role will ensure alignment across the full research continuum—from bench to bedside to population health—while identifying emerging scientific opportunities and driving strategic investments in faculty, infrastructure, and technology. The Vice Chair will play a central role in expanding externally funded research, enhancing laboratory and core infrastructure, and fostering interdisciplinary collaboration in partnership with leadership across the School of Medicine. The ideal candidate will be an Associate or full Professor and have a track record of external funding, national recognition, and a credible publication record. They will recruit, mentor, and retain top-tier investigators while shaping faculty development pathways and overseeing an equitable research compensation strategy that incentivizes productivity and innovation. The ideal candidate has a track record of building highly successful teams. They will work with our central team to build & support our investigators. This leader will also promote inclusive excellence, support team science, and represent the Department in institutional governance, helping to elevate the academic and research profile of the organization.
