About The Position

Premier Automation is seeking a VFD & Design Intern to support the Drives & Systems engineering team with electrical design, drive configuration, system testing, and commissioning of motor control solutions used in industrial automation environments. This internship is well suited for Electrical Engineering or Electro-Mechanical Engineering Technology students who enjoy hands-on learning and working closely with engineers to understand how industrial equipment is powered, controlled, and validated—from design through manufacturing checkout and commissioning. Headquartered in Monroeville, PA, Premier Automation designs and manufactures advanced motor control, VFD, and integrated automation systems for industrial customers worldwide, providing interns with exposure to how drive systems are built, tested, and supported in the field.

Requirements

  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Electro-Mechanical Engineering Technology (EMET), or a related technical field
  • Basic understanding of electrical circuits, AC/DC power, and motor control concepts
  • Interest in VFDs, motor starters, and industrial power systems
  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail
  • Effective communication skills and ability to work in a team environment
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook)
  • Ability to perform hands-on work in shop or industrial environments, including lifting up to 50 lbs
  • Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States.
  • Employment is conditional on passing a background check and drug screening, subject to applicable laws and regulations.

Nice To Haves

  • Exposure to CAD tools such as AutoCAD Electrical or SolidWorks Electrical is helpful
  • Introductory exposure to PLCs or drive systems through coursework or projects is a plus
  • Prior internship, co-op, or hands-on technical experience is a plus

Responsibilities

  • Support engineers with electrical design tasks, including reviewing schematics, layouts, and technical documentation
  • Assist with VFD configuration, parameter setup, and functional testing under guidance
  • Participate in manufacturing checkout and system testing for motor control panels and drive systems
  • Help create and maintain documentation such as wiring diagrams, test records, and commissioning packages
  • Assist with troubleshooting drive and electrical system issues during testing or startup activities
  • Support commissioning preparation and limited field activities as needed
  • Assist with documentation that supports project planning and quoting activities under guidance
