About The Position

The Veterinary Technician duties are to assist veterinarians with clinical and clerical tasks while providing the best patient care. Have a strong work ethic, and a desire to help improve the health of our patients.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from doctors, staff, and clients.
  • Ability to communicate empathy to clients regarding sensitive subjects related to their and/or their animal’s experience at AZE.
  • Ability to work patiently with distressed, frustrated, and disgruntled clients.
  • Ability to show compassion to clients in various emotional states.
  • Above average typing skills (50 WPM).
  • Ability to act independently but also be able to take direction from others
  • Multi-task in a busy environment
  • Work well in a team setting and communicate in a professional manner with colleagues and clients
  • Willingness to continually learn varied and advanced skills
  • Be reliable, punctual and have the ability to adapt to various situations
  • Anticipate the veterinarian’s needs
  • Ability to work effectively in an environment with exposure to dirt, dust, pollen, chemicals, animal hair, and other particulates
  • Flexibility with schedule to start early, stay late, perform on-call duty, weekend work as needed
  • Ability to identify and communicate after-hours emergency situations to doctors and senior staff
  • Must have equine experience and handling skills. (minimum of 2 years)

Nice To Haves

  • Basic understanding of core vaccinations, deworming schedules, common equine diseases and behaviors and basic lab tests is preferred but not required.
  • Basic experience with and knowledge of horses and the equine culture.
  • Internet, Microsoft Office including Outlook, Word and Excel preferred but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Assist veterinarian with procedures and treatments as needed.
  • Daily patient care, prep, and administration of PO, IV, and IM medications.
  • Maintain proper documentation in the electronic and written medical record.
  • Accurate obtaining and storage of in and out of house laboratory samples.
  • Efficient and accurate use of in-house laboratory equipment.
  • On call Duties are required, up to 1 weeknight (M-F), in addition to weekend rotation (every 3-4 weekends) and observed holidays.
  • Required to live within 1 hour of the clinic for “on call”.
  • Taking of x-rays, (holding the horse, holding the plate and taking of the x-ray)
  • Holding horses in our Bone Scan and MRI rooms.
  • Prepping for surgeries, maintaining a clean and safe surgery suite, cleaning up after the surgeries.
  • Trotting and jogging horses during lameness exams.
  • Proper care and maintenance of instruments and equipment.
  • Keep the clinic clean and presentable.
  • General barn maintenance includes, but is not limited to stall cleaning, feeding, and watering.
  • Maintain a professional physical appearance and attitude.
  • Interact with clients in a professional manner.
  • Self-motivated and able to work alone as needed.
