About The Position

Assists Veterinarian with surgeries, including sterilization of surgical instruments and area; Prepares animals for surgery and monitors during surgery and in recovery. Assists in evaluating the health of the shelter animals and brings issues to the attention of the veterinarian. Assists with performing medical evaluation of the animals in the shelter including a variety of animal health diagnostic tests and procedures. Administers prescribed medications and treatments as directed, and performs vaccinations. May perform euthanasia when necessary and/or assist veterinarian with euthanasia. Updates medical records of animals in the shelter, including diagnoses and treament, vaccines given and surgery performed. Promotes responsible pet ownership by answering questions from potential adopters and the public regarding animal health and behavior. Participates in activities and duties related to emergency management during a local state of disaster as directed by appropriate county managers.

Requirements

  • High school diploma/GED
  • 4 years experience working in animal medical environment
  • Computer and organizational skills
  • Verbal and written communication; interpersonal skills and ability to deal effectively with the public, employees, and elected officials
  • Supervisory and management skills
  • Current licensure as a Veterinary Technician (or eligible for) with the State Board of Veterinary Medicine Examiners
