About The Position

VEG is offering a Veterinary Technician Student Externship Program designed to provide a hands-on, immersive experience in emergency medicine. This program allows students to work alongside credentialed emergency veterinary technicians, engage in patient care, and explore the field of emergency veterinary medicine. The externship aims to build a strong foundation, inspire future veterinary technicians, and offer a glimpse into the fast-paced world of ER veterinary care.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in an AVMA-accredited veterinary technology or nursing program, or a program actively seeking accreditation.
  • Enrolled in a course that requires externship hours or skills.
  • Able to start the program within six months of application.
  • Current rabies vaccination or titer required.
  • Ability to stand for prolonged hours, kneel, and work on the floor.
  • Ability to lift up to 25 kg independently and support up to 40 kg with assistance.
  • Willingness to work in a noisy environment with strong or unpleasant odors.
  • Ability to work well in a fast-paced environment with diverse people.

Responsibilities

  • Learn from emergency veterinary professionals.
  • Receive real-time mentoring and on-the-floor learning from a credentialed veterinary technician.
  • Shadow and assist with triage, outpatient visits, diagnostics, anesthesia, and inpatient care.
  • Practice skills required by school proficiency checklists with mentorship.
  • Experience the teamwork, pace, and culture of emergency care at VEG.
