About The Position

VEG offers a hands-on, immersive externship in emergency veterinary medicine for students enrolled in eligible veterinary technology or nursing programs. Externs work alongside credentialed emergency veterinary technicians in VEG’s open-concept hospitals and gain exposure to emergency cases, patient triage, diagnostics, and inpatient care. The program is intended to help students build skills, experience the pace and teamwork of emergency care, and explore whether emergency veterinary medicine is a future career path. This is an unpaid externship opportunity.

Requirements

• Currently enrolled in an AVMA-accredited veterinary technology or nursing program, or a program actively seeking accreditation; the program is for students, not future veterinarians or veterinary assistants.
• Enrolled in a course that requires externship hours or skills.
• Able to start the program within six months of application.
• Current rabies vaccination or titer required.
• Able to stand for prolonged hours, kneel, and work on the floor.
• Able to lift up to 25 kg independently and support up to 40 kg with assistance.
• Willing to work in a noisy environment with strong or unpleasant odors.
• Able to work well in a fast-paced environment with people from varied backgrounds and personality types.
• Empathetic and people-centric, with an effort to understand different perspectives.
• Humble, willing to acknowledge mistakes, share credit, and support team accomplishments.
• Takes ownership of work and responsibility for outcomes.
• Curious and continuously seeks opportunities to learn and develop skills and knowledge.

Responsibilities

• Learn from emergency veterinary professionals.
• Pair with a credentialed emergency veterinary technician for real-time mentoring and on-the-floor learning.
• Shadow and assist with triage, outpatient visits, diagnostics, anesthesia, inpatient care, and other emergency-care activities.
• Practice skills from the student’s school proficiency checklist with mentorship and guidance.
• Experience the teamwork and pace of emergency veterinary care.
