About The Position

UT Southwestern is actively seeking an experienced Veterinary Technician I to join our Animal Resource Center (ARC) team. This role supports daily clinical care, surgical assistance, diagnostic testing, and health monitoring for a variety of research animals. The position requires a minimum of two (2) years of experience in a clinical or research animal setting. AALAS certification is preferred, along with strong attention to detail, sound judgment, and the ability to work independently in standard and containment (ABSL‑2/3) environments. Responsibilities include pre‑/post‑operative monitoring, blood collection, routine diagnostics, and accurate medical recordkeeping. The Veterinary Technician I works under general supervision to provide technical assistance to veterinary medical or research staff in delivering health care, including veterinary medicine, surgery, and radiology, to laboratory animals. This role also provides organization and coordination of veterinary technical tasks. The work location is the Dallas Campus, with potential travel to other UTSW locations. The shift requirement is days, Monday through Friday, with rotating on-call duties and overtime available with management approval.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma Or Equivalent
  • 2 years Working with animals in a clinical or research setting

Responsibilities

  • Assist the ARC veterinary staff to provide research and health care support for a wide variety of species.
  • Routinely work in the animal facility without direct supervision.
  • Provide pre- and post-operative animal monitoring.
  • Maintain animal health and study related records as required by the IACUC and ARC policy.
  • Perform routine diagnostic testing utilizing common laboratory equipment (e.g., internal and external parasite examinations, PCV and total protein and urinalysis).
  • Work comfortably in a microbiological barrier facility as well as ABSL-2 and ABSL-3 containment areas.
  • Obtain routine blood collections from research animals.
  • Perform antigen injections and sample collections for antibody production in research animals.
  • Maintain appropriate medical records as required.
  • Assist in maintaining surveillance of investigator research protocols.
  • Participate in University mandated training such as MRI, Radiation Safety and Blood Borne Pathogens.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
