About The Position

Clay County is seeking a Veterinary Technician I to provide essential care for animals in the shelter. This role involves administering medications, performing basic physical examinations, conducting diagnostic tests, and maintaining accurate medical records. The technician will also assist the veterinarian with procedures, support the Foster Coordinator, and help maintain a clean and safe environment. Additionally, the position involves interacting with the public regarding lost animals and adoptions, ensuring efficient animal processing for surgery and adoption, and performing other duties as assigned to support the team.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED Equivalent
  • Minimum of two years experience as a veterinary technician
  • Valid Florida driver’s license with clean driving record
  • Any combination of education and experience may be substituted, so long as it provides the desired skills, knowledge, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job.
  • Excellent customer-service skills and ability to maintain an organized system and complete multiple tasks simultaneously
  • Ability to foster good animal control-community relations among residents and visitors to the shelter
  • Working knowledge of Florida and Clay County Animal Ordinances and Laws
  • Working knowledge of humane care and treatment of animals
  • Ability to work under stressful conditions
  • Ability to follow written and/or oral instructions carefully and to adhere to standard operating procedures and instructions
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the County’s Emergency Management Plan: functions as essential personnel in the event of a declared disaster. Employees may be required to perform duties, including the employee’s normal work function or other emergency support functions as deemed necessary by the County, as assigned before, during, and after hazardous weather or state of local emergency.
  • The position regularly lifts and/or moves up to 50 pounds, frequently lifts and/or moves up to 75 pounds, and occasionally lifts and/or moves up to 100-200 pounds.
  • The person in this position needs to be able to frequently move about to ensure proper care of animals and to access files, personnel, office machinery, etc.
  • Constantly positions self to inspect and assess animals for wellness, temperament and potential foster or adoptive placement.
  • Must be able to inspect, assess and perceive condition of animals and related data and information and to summarize relevant data for supervisors and medical staff
  • Constantly operates a computer and other office productivity machinery, such as a calculator, copy machine, and computer printer.
  • Frequently communicates with supervisors, other staff, including medical staff, and the public regarding animal welfare and foster placement and procedures. Must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations.

Responsibilities

  • Provides animals in the shelter’s care with daily medications, basic physical examinations, recheck exams, blood draws, re-vaccination, and monthly heartworm and flea prevention
  • Completes basic diagnostic testing, such as fecal exams, skin scrapes, ear cytology, urinalysis, heartworm testing, and FeLV/FIV testing
  • Performs routine observations of animals and their cages to monitor food consumption, behavior, obvious signs of illness, and condition of the animals for health and safety purposes
  • Assists veterinarian with daily rounds, surgery, animal restraint, physical examinations, rechecks, testing and treatments
  • Assists the Foster Coordinator with foster parent coordination via email and phone, scheduling and assisting with foster appointments
  • Cleans and disinfects kennels, cages, and related areas in the medical department
  • Assists members of the public searching for lost animals or seeking to adopt animals
  • Helps maintain current and accurate medical records on each animal in the shelter software
  • Ensures that animals are flowing through the shelter system quickly and efficiently
  • Ensures that all animals are processed for surgery and adoption.
  • Performs other duties as assigned, including working in other areas to cover absences or provide relief for other employees.
