About The Position

The Ophthalmology Service at UW Veterinary Care is seeking a dedicated Veterinary Technician Assistant for a long-term role within our fast-paced specialty team. We are an inviting, high-energy group that thrives on diverse cases and collaborative success. In this role, you will become an essential asset to the entire hospital, serving as a cornerstone of the Ophthalmology service while gaining broader expertise through rotations in other small animal specialties. This position is expected to be full-time, 100% FTE (40 hours a week). The anticipated schedule for this vacancy is Monday through Friday, with shifts varying between 8:00am and 6:00pm based on clinical needs.

Requirements

  • Ability to lift a minimum of 50 pounds independently.
  • Physical and manual dexterity to perform specialized technical tasks.

  • Previous Veterinary Hospital or hands on animal experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Facilitate seamless clinical workflows by preparing patients, equipment, procedure rooms and surgical suites for specialized examinations and operative procedures.
  • Coordinate end-to-end surgical workflows by pulling instrument pick lists, maintaining sterile fields, and providing intra-operative support to DVMs and nursing staff; including the use of specialized equipment while managing efficient room turnovers and sanitation between procedures.
  • Develop proficiency in operating and troubleshooting specialized clinical equipment, progressively building the technical expertise and confidence required to support a high-tech specialty environment.
  • Align daily clinical activities by fostering a high-quality learning environment for fourth-year students and supporting service staff and doctors to enhance operational efficiency, improve patient access, and deliver the compassionate, cutting-edge care.
  • Accurately upload and manage digital files from diagnostic instruments, ensuring all data is organized and saved within the team’s secure, designated storage space for clinical review.
  • Act as a coordinator for outpatient services to ensure appointments remain on schedule, appointments are kept on time, clients are kept in communication regarding their pets care, areas are kept cleaned between patient visits.
  • Maintain peak operational efficiency by proactively assisting with managing service-level and operating room inventory, ensuring all exam rooms and surgical suites are fully stocked and supply chains remain organized for daily clinical use.
  • Execute and assist with essential diagnostic procedures such as fluorescein staining, tonometry, and Schirmer tear tests; ensuring technical precision and patient comfort in small animal specialty services.
  • Maintain a primary focus within the Ophthalmology service while rotating through additional small animal specialty services to broaden clinical expertise, enhance operational flexibility, and support diverse patient needs across the hospital.
  • Assists with routine laboratory tests and specimen collection according to established medical orders and care plans (5%)
  • Maintains organization of and updates records related to medical procedures and billing (10%)
  • Inventories and organizes supplies.
  • Serves as a point of contact for animal owners and stakeholders providing information and answering questions (10%)
  • Cleans and maintains organization of animal holding spaces, work areas and equipment.
  • Documents and disseminates results to the appropriate entities (5%)
  • Rotate to other small animal specialty services (15%)
  • Assists with and executes the preparation, completion, and documentation of basic technical animal care procedures, assessments, and medication administration according to established care plans and medical necessity (20%)
