About The Position

Salt Lake County is seeking a highly enthusiastic Veterinary Technician for a time-limited position to coordinate and oversee the Pet Assistance on Wheels Mobile Veterinary Clinic. This role involves promoting services to cities within the county, driving the mobile clinic to designated event sites, canvassing neighborhoods for service scheduling, and performing veterinary technician duties within the mobile clinic. Requirements

  • Two (2) years’ experience as a Vet Assistant or Vet Tech, or other closely related field, OR an equivalent combination of related education and experience.
  • Associates degree from an accredited college or university in Animal Science, Veterinary Technology, or other closely related field, plus one (1) year of related experience; OR an equivalent combination of related education and experience.
  • Veterinary Technology certification through the State of Utah, or certification must be obtained within six (6) months of hire.
  • A valid Driver’s License recognized by the State of Utah is required to operate a Salt Lake County vehicle at the time of hire.
  • Must receive a verified negative test result on a mandatory drug test before starting in this position.
  • Will be subject to random alcohol and drug testing.
  • May be subject to post-accident and reasonable suspicion alcohol and drug testing.
  • Must pass a required background check through fingerprinting and enrollment in the continuous RAP Back (Record of Arrest and Prosecution Back) program by current County Human Resources policy requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinates and oversees the Pet Assistance on Wheels Mobile Veterinary Clinic.
  • Coordinates and promotes services to the cities in the county.
  • Drives vehicle to designated event site.
  • Canvasses neighborhoods for scheduling of services.
  • Performs veterinary technician work on the mobile clinic.
  • Effectively communicates the importance of spay/neuter and vaccination to the community.
  • Schedules an appropriate number and size of animals to be seen on the mobile unit.
  • Performs safe handling and administration of vaccines, injectable medications, and sharps disposal.
  • Restrains animals for examination and assists in advanced treatments and diagnostics.
  • Ensures clinic areas, equipment, and supplies are cleaned, re-stocked, and maintained appropriately.
  • Performs examinations, advanced treatments, and diagnostics with direct supervision of a veterinarian.
  • Handles surgical instrument care, preparation, and sterilization of surgical packs.
  • Performs daily disinfection and maintenance of the surgical suite, equipment, and supplies.
  • Administers anesthetic medication by inhalation/intubation or intravenous injection.
  • Assists the veterinarian during surgery as needed.
  • Performs surgical preparations and positioning of patients.
  • Monitors animals during and after surgical procedures and provides appropriate nursing care for recovery.
  • Handles and documents controlled substances and follows all policies and procedures related to them.
  • Calculates and documents medication dosages, including controlled substances.
  • Assists Veterinary Clinic Supervisor in maintaining inventory and orders pharmaceutical and surgical supplies/equipment.
  • Dispenses prescribed medications and discharges animals to owners, providing at-home care instructions.
  • Maintains medical records for individual animals, including associated charges for services.
  • Maintains assigned vehicle and equipment.
  • May arrange for repair and routine maintenance of vehicle and equipment.
