About The Position

The Surgery Supervisor will provide daily administrative and operational leadership for the Surgery Department. The Supervisor coordinates staffing, patient flow, surgery-room operations, training, equipment, communication, and performance expectations. This position supports safe, efficient, and compassionate patient care while promoting a respectful, professional, and supportive workplace.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 3 years of veterinary technician experience required.
  • Minimum of 2 years of specialty anesthesia monitoring or comparable critical-care experience.
  • Strong communication, organization, conflict-resolution, and leadership skills.
  • Ability to remain professional and composed in a high-acuity environment.
  • Demonstrated commitment to staff development, patient safety, and continuing education.

Nice To Haves

  • Maryland RVT preferred but not required.
  • Previous supervisory, management, lead, or department-coordination experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate daily Surgery Department workflow, assignments, schedules, and patient flow.
  • Assign cases and duties according to patient needs, staffing, workload, and employee competency.
  • Adjust assignments during emergencies, absences, high patient volume, or increased patient acuity.
  • Communicate operational concerns, delays, equipment needs, and staffing risks to the Hospital Manager or appropriate hospital leadership.
  • Maintain organized, safe, and adequately supplied surgery and recovery areas.
  • Support effective shift-to-shift communication and patient handoffs.
  • Monitor equipment readiness and report maintenance or safety concerns promptly.
  • Promote compliance with CVSS policies, safety procedures, infection-control standards, and documentation requirements.
  • Monitor attendance, punctuality, scheduling needs, breaks, and department coverage.
  • Assist with staffing plans and daily schedule adjustments as assigned.
  • Set consistent and professional expectations for ICU employees.
  • Utilize coaching, counseling, and the corrective action process when appropriate and with support of the hospital manager.
  • Participate in 90-day, annual, and other performance evaluations as assigned.
  • Promote a positive, professional, respectful, and supportive work environment.
  • Encourage teamwork, accountability, effective communication, and continuous improvement.
  • Address interpersonal concerns professionally and use the appropriate chain of command.
  • Model reliability, ethical conduct, professionalism, and compliance with CVSS policies.
  • Maintain an appropriately positive and engaging workplace while preserving patient-care standards.
  • Identify surgery training needs based on patient acuity, staff performance, equipment, policy changes, and operational requirements.
  • Support orientation, onboarding, and training of new surgery employees.
  • Assist with maintaining surgery competency checklists and training records.
  • Ensure training is documented and competency-based.
  • Ensure employees perform only duties for which they are trained, validated, authorized, and legally permitted.
  • Coordinate cross-departmental training with the ICU and Receiving Supervisors when appropriate.
  • Complete a minimum of 10 hours of annual continuing education in leadership, management, supervision, or related professional-development topics.
  • Assist with anesthesia monitoring, surgery, patient preparation, recovery, diagnostics, treatments, and emergency response.
  • Support patient positioning, restraint, transport, medication administration, fluid therapy, wound care, and postoperative care.
  • Ensure accurate documentation of anesthesia, medications, treatments, monitoring, and patient status.
  • Reinforce sterile technique, infection control, equipment maintenance, instrument processing, and safety procedures.
  • Escalate patient-care concerns, complications, changes in condition, or safety risks to the attending veterinarian.
  • Collaborate with the ICU Supervisor to support safe and timely patient transfers.
  • Communicate patient readiness, staffing, equipment, timing, and ICU bed availability.
  • Provide complete handoff information, including procedure history, anesthesia status, medications, monitoring needs, equipment, and care instructions.
  • Communicate changes in patient condition or additional support needs.
  • Coordinate transfer-related training and addressing workflow barriers.
  • Escalate delays, incomplete handoffs, staffing concerns, or clinical concerns to the appropriate veterinarian or hospital leader.
