About The Position

The Oregon National Primate Center (ONPRC) is seeking a Veterinary Research/Health Technician 2 to provide research support, routine health care, and husbandry for laboratory animals. This role involves performing tasks directly related to animal care, including supporting research protocols, administering medications, collecting samples, and maintaining animal housing and facilities. The position requires a high degree of responsibility and accountability in animal care and research support, with employees having greater autonomy in determining work priorities and requiring less direct supervision.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or GED
  • Two years of experience caring for animals in a research setting and certification by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science at the Assistant Lab Animal Technician level (ALAT) or ability to obtain certification following 12 months of employment; OR One year of experience caring for animals in a research setting and certification by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science at the Lab Animal Technician level (LAT) or ability to obtain certification following 12 months of employment; OR An equivalent combination of training, certification and experience.

  • Ability to read, write, and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in oral and/or written formats with both technical and professional staff.
  • Certification by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science at the Lab Animal Technician level (LAT) OR Certified Veterinary Technician (CVT) (no experience required).
  • A valid Driver's License and the ability to drive DCM/ONPRC vehicles on and off campus.
  • May be required to complete an FBI security risk assessment.

  • Bachelor’s degree in science, preferably in related field such as Animal Sciences, Biology, Physiology, etc.

Responsibilities

  • Perform research support tasks, routine health care, and manual and technical husbandry tasks for laboratory animals.
  • Coordinate and complete tasks following established research protocols and procedures.
  • Participate in the development, coordination, and implementation of institution-wide animal care and use procedures.
  • Implement established procedures and policies governing the safe and humane care and use of laboratory animals.
  • Safely perform standard veterinary procedures, including venipuncture, medication dose calculations, administration of medications via various routes, and collection of body fluids.
  • Participate in general animal health surveillance by observing animals, recognizing abnormalities, and reporting observations.
  • Perform animal health procedures such as weighing, TB testing, and blood collections.
  • Capture, restrain, identify, sex, and transport laboratory animals.
  • Feed and water animals; sanitize animal primary housing, shelters, equipment, and facilities.
  • Assist with facility maintenance, including simple repairs and replacements.
  • Unload and store feed bags (25-50 lbs each).
  • Assist with group-housed animal capture and processing.
  • Provide care for animals in the nursery.
  • Operate equipment such as cage washers, floor scrubbers, autoclaves, pressure washers, scales, and veterinary care instruments.
  • Complete and submit data processing forms.
  • Access and input information into computerized animal record files.
  • Assist with the acquisition and maintenance of regulatory, research, and animal records and reports.
