About The Position

A veterinary assistant will fill a vital role in our animal hospital! The Veterinary Assistant supports and assists the Veterinarians and Veterinary Technicians, ensuring the safety of pets and clients, and the continuity of quality veterinary care. They work to keep pets safe and comfortable during their visit.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED required
  • Ability to work flexible hours including Saturday's

Nice To Haves

  • Preferred one year of experience in a veterinary clinic/hospital setting
  • Currently enrolled in Veterinary Technician school a plus
  • Proficient with computers. Cornerstone experience a plus
  • Basic written, verbal, and active listening communication skills with a customer-oriented approach
  • Basic analytical, critical thinking, judgement, and problem-solving skills
  • Compassion and empathy for both pets and pet owners
  • Interact with a variety of clients and employees in a professional, caring, compassionate, and tactful manner

Responsibilities

  • Assist veterinarians and vet techs with in-house bloodwork, setting up urine & fecals, using Idexx Lab Equipment
  • Clean, sterilize, and maintain kennels, operating rooms, exam rooms, cages, and treatment area.
  • Room clients & obtain efficient and concise patient history, discuss preventative care (vaccination schedule, routine tests, and flea/tick/heartworm preventatives)
  • Clean and sterilize instruments, equipment, and tools
  • Ensure exam and operating rooms are stocked
  • Assist in restraining animals during exams, nail trims, blood draws, x-rays and other services provided.
  • Walk dogs pre/post surgery and in-house patients.
  • Change bedding and kennel materials
  • Fill & verify medications as directed by DVM’s
  • Assist with runback/technician appointments; retrieve patient from owner, assist LVT with procedure, enter charges, return patient to owner
  • Provide the owners education, resources and information on how best to care for pets in general, at the Veterinarian’s direction, for specific conditions, and after various procedures
  • Monitor, record, and report the physical condition and vital signs of the hospitalized pets
  • Vacuum, mop, laundry & dishes
  • Prioritize closing duties
  • Ensure labs go out at appropriate time
  • Other duties as directed by DVM, HA or LVT's
  • Support a practice environment that promotes collaboration and teamwork and ensures the delivery of quality, compassionate, effective, and efficient health care to pets
  • Comply with all practice policies, quality assurance guidelines, and minimum standards of care
